Must-know figures could change for Texas students

they probably think that teaching that the world is round and not flat is a compromise to liberals.

Liberal republicans probably do believe that, yes.

But liberal republicans should be silenced forever.

I would rather teach them the historical facts; ones that actually exist, not the ones that revisionist Libbo historians have chosen.

I agree on historical facts and the rest is just more partisan bs from you.

As I see this, this should have nothing to do with partisan issues but have everything to do with facts. And sadly something as simple as make a standardized "must know" list has turned into yet another bitch fight of partisan politics in the US. And yes both sides are at fault, and yes both sides should be ashamed of themselves. Children should be allowed to learn what they wish to learn and form their own opinions, and no government, council, church, priest, or even parents should force anything on children when it comes to opinions.

Of course Newt should be on the list as should other "conservatives" that have had an impact on life in the US... this Schlafly woman.. not so much as far as I can read myself to her history. She sounds like another blow-heart talking head conservative stuck in the cold war and the dark ages. Surely the "right" could find more important conservative figures than this woman.

It's not partisan BS from me. It's the attempt by Libbos to revise the history that is taught in our schools: the Civil War was fought to free the slaves, we lost Vietnam and Iraq is an illegal imperialistic war. I can just hear it now.

George Washington was a rich white slave owning traitor, and btw much less important won the the Revolutionary War and was the first President.

He practically begged to command Colonial forces, too.

So the Civil war was not a war to free the slaves at least in part?

And you did not loose the Vietnam war? I mean did Vietnam not fall into the communist sphere which was the whole reason the war started in the first place...?

As for the last one.. never heard that from normal left wingers.. but hey.

why do we have schools then?

What do you mean? Schools are there to provide a uniformed and mass education system for children in such things as reading, writing and so on. When it comes to history, they should be taught the facts, not the facts according to political ideology.

For example, apdst point it out..

The civil war.. was in part due to free the slaves. Was there other things involved? Sure there was, but freeing the slaves was a big part too. Should all parts be taught? of course and I bet they are.. at least they were 20 years ago when I was using a US history book in my US school.

What I am trying to say, is that children should be left alone to form their own opinions and views on things like historical facts, politics and religion and should not be force fed religious and partisan bs.

Of course it wasn't fought to free the slaves, not even in part.

Listen closely: United States forces did not lose the fight against Communist forces in Vietnam. Learn it, know it, live it.

Now, Pete! C'mon, dude. We all know you've heard it before.

If freeing the slaves was so important, why did Lincoln take over two years to issue the Emancimation Proclamation. Why was the Confederate government considering giving slaves their freedom in exchange for military service?

You might check into this a bit. What is the predominant political party in Texas? Who is ensuring the history and social study books are as they want them, liberals or conservatives? Which political philosophy is more likely to create "revisionist history"? Hint: the last one is a kinda trick question.

So, you've been worring about it for the last 40 years or so - right?

Can anyone tell me what wrong with describing the US as a republic rather than a democracy?

No, this is the first I have actually heard of this. I have heard about the whole creationist/ID crap, but that is somewhat different. As I now understand it, it is not a new issue, but I did not know about, and was thence not worried.

Personally, I would rather kids learned how the government worked, and not worry much about the label attached.

I have, and I think liberalism should be all but eradicated. We will still need a few token kooks so that we never forget why we avoid liberalism, but other than that liberalism should be put down like a dog.

Jerry called some one else a "kook". I admit it, I laughed out loud in real life.

Actually the text book writers white wash the history books quite often.

The state law makers may quibble over some irrelevant details but if you crack open one of the text books, they can be quite revealing as to what they consider factual history to be.

Most of it isn't even put into context either.

No, this is the first I have actually heard of this.
Look up "revisionist history" and, even better, "post-revisionist history".
Been going on for a long time.

During Elementary/High School, there simply is not time to get too far in depth on many subjects. Just in US History, you have close to 300 years to cover in one hour a day chunks.

Learning should not be confined to an hour a day in class. If kids were actually given real instruction in class and reinforced it with reading and homework, we might not have so many little dumbasses graduating now.

Todays youth could be taught in front of a laptop, with the brightest minds available, and we could save billions each year!

This is not debatable, this is about government jobs, unions, and control, always has been.

Most school teachers are Libbos, though. That's the flaw in your logic.

Preachin' to the choir, brother. You're preachin' to the choir.

In Texas? Really?

Well, let me back track, I wasn't talking specifically about Texas. I was talking about American schools in general.

Yes, this is true. Would be an interesting topic for a more in depth thread. The problem of course is that it is hard to enforce, and hard to force kids to take an interest in things other than the opposite sex.
