Superintendent asked to step down after not airing Obama Speech...

Valdosta Daily Times - Controversy leads to resignation request

If this was a private school, I would side with the school. However, since it is not, the Superintendent serves at the request of the people. However, I don't agree with or appreciate the whole insinuation of racial bias...

    Thoughts?

I think refusing to air the Pres speech was a bad decision, but I think calling for the Suprtdt's resignation b/c of that is a bad decision too.

I don't really see what the big deal is if a school chose not to air it because they didn't feel like it. I mean, all of the protests surrounding the speech were childish and idiotic, of course. But imagine for a moment that those protests had never happened, and a school just decided not to air it because they felt they had better things to do. I don't think that would've caused nearly as much outrage. Other presidents have addressed students before, and some schools simply choose not to show those speeches.

If the superintendent's reasoning was curriculum-based rather than based on the belief that Obama was part of a communist conspiracy to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids, I don't think he should have to resign.

So let me get this straight; the superintendent most likely didn't air the Obama speech for political reasons. So people are now most likely calling for his resignation for political reasons.

    Yep, just business as usual.

I see our schools are run from the White House now, not by Superintendents and Principals. If it had been a Bush speech, would they ask him to resign?

While I agree that it's quite silly to ask this man to step down for something that is only a result of faux outrage, its equally silly to say that our schools are being run by the White House. Rev. Rose was the one who asked him to step down, not any member of the White House staff, or anyone even remotely connected to White House staff.

It was his call to make and he made it.

If the school board doesn't like it, they can vote him out.

If the people don't like the school board's decision, they can vote them out.

It was actually people within the community that asked him to step down.

Like I said, personally, I see nothing wrong with what he did, but as a public school superintendent, the public can ask him to step down for pretty much any reason. It just disgusts me that they had to make it about race.

Yes, I understood that. I think this whole thing has been much ado about nothing, from the paranoid delusions of those who thought the speech would be indoctrination, to those who think it's worth making a big deal if an administrator decided not to show the speech. Playing politics with our kids is sad.
