Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America'

What about the movie Religulous? A movie like Religulous can secure a distribution deal with no problem because:

1. It's American
2. It's a documentary by a well-known political comedian/commentator

Actually, I'm willing to bet that they have gotten offers from various indie distributors, but they don't want to settle for that and instead want a major deal. They are now whining about it because they aren't getting one.
Again, a mockumentary by a comedian. This is quite different then a so called true life story of Charles Darwin.

I bet there is some truth in the indie distributor. I haven't seen the budget but I would assume the scale of the visuals and funding Paul Bettamy and Jennifer Connolly wasn't cheap.

That's just nuts. Both of them go deeply into the idea that the teachings of Christianity are based on lies -- or at least untruths -- and DVC is about the Church killing to keep "the truth" buried. Yeah, they chose the Catholic church, but that's probably only because it's the oldest and biggest. I just don't see Lutherans being big on the idea that everything taught about Jesus and Mary Magdalene is a lie, either.

Yeah and Angels and Demons was so ridiculously transparent in its Catholic bashing that I had the friend I went with apologize for having chosen the movie at all. I'm not deeply religious, but within the first 15 minutes of the movie, I had had my fill of all the Christian hate seething from the film.

Catholic Church does not equal Christianity.

Catholic Church does not equal Christianity.

Yes it does. Bashing Christians bashes Catholics and bashing Catholics bashes Christians.

Unless of course you are one of those whackjobs that claims Catholics aren't Christians....

What lies in Christianity is is based on? It is founded on the idea that the Catholic church is holding secrets to keep power over Christians. The catholic church does not equate to Christianity. One is a governing body of a denomination and the other is an entire religion.

Of course no one wants to be told they are being lied to. The fact is though that their religious belief in Jesus and the Trinity is not complicated. Jesus is never shown as not divine and not the son of god.

"Movies can be as controversial as they want as long as they don't touch religion." Obviously The Last Temptation Of Christ was controversial, desservedly or not, and it touched religion. The makers of this movie are just trying to drum up publicity.

The Last Temptation Of Christ was controversial if you never saw the movie. The makers very well may be just looking for publicity and buzz around the movie in hopes of scoring a big distributor deal.

The Catholic church is a bastion of hypocrisy, corruption and pursuit of power. They dont represent Christian values, nor are they representation of Christianity in general.

Hmm I didn't seem to think Angels and Demons bashed the church. There was a rogue Camerlengo but not so much a bashing of the church. Which parts did you feel bashed the church?

I found it a little touchy when I saw it.

You know when the opening credits started? From there until the closing credits rolled.

It certainly wasn't a mockumentary. Though, it did have it's humorous moments.

Exactly, and with an indie distributor they wouldn't make enough of a return financially. So now they are whining and trying to create controversy because they couldn't secure a major distribution deal.

What a ludicrous statement. If I bash the man standing next to me am I bashing ALL MEN? Are you impacted by my bash?

If I bash Catholics for something specific to Catholics does that mean I am also bashing Lutherans, Protestants, Mormons, Baptists, Episcopalians, Anglican's, and Messianic Judaist's?

You know when the opening credits started? From there until the closing credits rolled.

Regardless, the Vatican did release a press statement, if I recall, deeming the movie harmless.

I'm getting the impression that the mere fact that a church is present in the movie is what is "touchy" to you. The context and how the church is involved in the story line is meaningless.

At least now I know what I am dealing with...

...and have full justification for not taking you seriously at all when it comes to this particular topic.

As they should. There was nothing negative on the Vatican in the movie. In the Da Vinci Code the Vatican was only attacked by association. It is made clear the group of rouge priests in the story are acting outside of the knowledge of the Pope and College of Cardinals.

False analogy. If you bash men in general, are you not bashing the man standing next to you? If you bash the man by attacking the core of his masculinity, are you not bashing all men?

If I bash Catholics for something specific to Catholics does that mean I am also bashing Lutherans, Protestants, Mormons, Baptists, Episcopalians, Anglican's, and Messianic Judaist's?

If it is a commonly shared belief between them all, then yes, you are.

But I am not in this thread to defend the catholic church so when your vitriol gets knee deep, I will just gracefully bow out before you guys get to mouthfoaming too hard over it all.

Good grief. No wonder you think those films don't bash Christianity.

:doh

Major US film distributors are concerned first and foremost with making money. Controversy really has little to do with it, unless that somehow negatively effects the money aspect. The subject of Charles Darwin isn't really controversial enough to do that considering the level of controversy that some films with major distributors have had in the past.

Then you are getting the wrong impression. But let's not let anything like objectivity and honest toward my posts get in the way of you winding up your vitriol.

I've been trying to get to the root of what exactly is "touchy" to you. Please share what in Angels & Demons and/or the Last Temptation of Christ you found as an attack on Christianity.
