Tens of thousands attend broad protest of government in nation's capital

WASHINGTON -- A sea of protesters filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall yesterday in the largest rally against President Barack Obama since he took office, a culmination of a summer-long season of protests that began with opposition to a health care overhaul and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with government.

On a cloudy and cool day, the demonstrators came from all corners of the country, waving American flags and handwritten signs explaining the root of their frustrations. Their anger stretched well beyond the health care legislation moving through Congress, with shouts of support for gun rights, lower taxes and a smaller government.

But as they sang verse after verse of patriotic hymns like "God Bless America," sharp words of profane and political criticism were aimed at Mr. Obama and Congress.

Seems this is a bit more than mere "Right wing fringe" groups.... What do you all think of this turnout, to me, it indicates a possible out of touchness with this administration.

You mean those dumb rightwingnuts, that cling to their Bibles and guns, knew how to find Washington, DC?

Easily the most intentionally underreported story of the weekend... and on a slow news weekend at that! Note that the London Daily Mail's online headline conjectured that the number of marchers was closer to a million than tens of thousands. I understand that similar comments were made by a Paris newspaper. Any thinking individual can see from the picture above that the number is easily in the hundreds of thousands. But, the only American TV reporting of this major protest was decent coverage by Fox, some coverage by CNN, demeaning coverage by ABC, and the sound of crickets by CBS, and Obama's sponsors, NBC and MSNBC! However, they didn't miss Obama's 100th edition of his healthcare lies in front of 15,000 Kool Aid drinkers!

Where has honest journalism gone in America?

I couldn't be there, but I'd like to thank my fellow patriots for their good work this weekend in Washington DC!

these are the same reporters who over reported war protests. just sayin....

I don't think much about it at all really, other than regarding their agenda as being on the same level as the teabaggers. Both groups seem to have too many wingnuts involved in their activities to be taken seriously enough to actually have an impact on government policies.

From what I can see it makes for a good photo-op and extra work for the grounds crew, but I doubt it represents much more than a flock of sheep doing the bidding of organized special interest groups like ALL.

I find people who use the term "tea-baggers" in the same camp as "wingnuts" I stopped reading there.

Also, keep in mind, that most conservative protesters have regular jobs and are not paid to protest (as some are). There were local tea parties all over the U.S. for those who could not be in Washington. Our local tea party in New Orleans had to be changed to an indoor event due to flash flood threatening rains all weekend, but there were very likely hundreds of thousands of patriots all over America who were with the Washington crowd in spirit!

Pre-Obama Bush years: Cindy Sheehan and a few fellow protesters pitch a tent outside of Crawford, Texas to protest against the war.
The result: A blitz of network news reporters is there to show the world how evil George Bush is!

Post-Bush Obama year: Cindy Sheehan and a few fellow protesters go to Martha's Vineyard to protest Obama's continuance of the war.
The result: The sound of crickets from the network news crowd!

Post-Bush Obama year: Possibly the largest crowd in decades protests in Washington DC against Obamacare, government spending, and socialism.
The result: The sound of crickets from some networks and minimizing the size and importance of the crowd by others!

Do we see a trend here?... Duh!

Kind of a small turnout for what is supposed to represent a "Groundswell".

Oh well....maybe the next time.

And yet those numbers surpassed war protests, the million man march, and the million mom march against the second amendment........hmm, interesting.

You might call yourself moderate, but your demeaning and misguided term of "teabagger" shows your ignorance of the truth! These decent people are more numerous than you think. They are not wingnuts, rather, they are the lifeblod of America.

Just keep your head in the sand, you useful idiot!

Lowball figures are 60K, for the one city.

Compare that to the common attendance of war/anti-Bush protests.

Or, just continue seeing what you want to see.

Well I hope people are opening their eyes to what the government has been doing for the past like 3 Presidents now. But the press is doing all it can to sweep this under the rug, and FOX news is way too annoying/stupid to listen to and it's probably the only one giving consideration to this issue. Maybe we'll wake up and retake the Republic, I hope people start to understand what sort of one party politics we've been under for awhile now and move to correct it.

This was billed as a much larger event...not exactly a small city anti-war march.

This was supposed to be the teabaggers "million man march". Turned out not to be such a big event.

Appeals to popularity don't mean a thing.

I think a lot of people would protest both - fascist policies abroad and fascist policies at home (i.e. government ownership of your body).

And yet those numbers surpassed war protests, the million man march, and the million mom march against the second amendment........hmm, interesting.

Ahhh.....the conservative estimate for the Million Man March was 400K. Other estimates put the figure at over a million.

I don't know how you think 60k numbers surpass 400k-1 million+:doh

This shows that Americans are unhappy, and that the news is politically motivated in one form or another.
Now in the next election if they can be moved away from voting for dem or rep,and into some other political camp in large numbers maybe we the people can make a difference.

They didn't surpass any of those. Nor did it surpass a pro-choice march in 2004. Doesn't mean it wasn't an impressive turnout, but lying about attendance diminishes the numbers that did turn out.

Oh please, put away the violin. Tea Partiers make front page of the WaPo, but 2002 anti-war protest (with a higher turnout) gets put in the Metro section inside the paper:

Hmm, didn't see a number of 60k anywhere in the estimates, and looking at the crowd it was probably bigger than that, but the million man march was never settled on numbers, and, it's goal was to meet 1+ million, but, like most of liberalism, the goals were bigger than the results. Care to address the rest of my point or do you want to just be a hyperpartisan in the traditional Disneydude way?

The National Park Service always provides an estimate. The estimate for this march was 60k. That is a conservative estimate. The same conservative estimate by the National Park Service for the Million man march was 400k.

So that should put it into perspective.

There probably were more than 60k there, but it is still a rather disappointing turn-out for an event that was supposed to be much larger.

As far as addressing the "rest of your point".....I went back and re-read your post....there is no "rest of the point". Your entire point was based on the fallacy that this "crowd" exceeded other marches. There's nothing left to respond to.

Estimated numbers are that, not relevant, the point now is that this indeed come closer to it's goal than the million man march, and the turnout was greater than those of the other examples surely, I seriously doubt there was a turnout of even 400k for the MMM since it was reported as a massive failure at the time, by the same press that did NOT report this gathering.
