Blue Dog Ross Comes Out Against Public Option

Blue Dog Ross Comes Out Against Public Option
    By Perry Bacon Jr.
    Washington Post

Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.), the Blue Dog congressman who battled with Democratic Party leaders for much of July before reaching an agreement on health-care reform legislation, said Tuesday that he could no longer back the government-insurance option included in the bill he voted for before the congressional recess.

"I have been skeptical about the public health insurance option from the beginning and used August to get feedback from you, my constituents," he wrote in a statement his office released publicly. "An overwhelming number of you oppose a government-run health insurance option, and it is your feedback that has led me to oppose the public option as well."

Well what do you know... There's at least one democrat that actually listens to his constituents.

It's also good news that all the people who showed up to protest the democrats health care plan, had some effect.

Nate Silver wrote about Ross and his district this morning ...

Analysis: Public Option Is Likely Popular in Most Blue Dog Districts

Yesterday, Arkansas' Mike Ross, an influential Blue Dog Democrat, stated that he was opposed to a public option in the Democrats' health care reform package. "An overwhelming number of you oppose a government-run health insurance option, and it is your feedback that has led me to oppose the public option as well," Ross asserted in a letter to his constituents.

Ross may well have gotten a significant number of letters and e-mails against the public option. He may have hosted a town hall forum before an audience who was skeptical of such a provision. But if Ross had actually polled his district, it's unlikely he would have found overwhelming opposition to the public option. Instead, he might even have found a that a plurality or majority of his constituents supported the public plan.

Every now and again, I find myself actually proud of a politician... *gasp*

Mike Ross represents my home town. If his town halls were overwhelmingly against "socialized health care" then it's the absolutely utmost in hypocrisy on their part. The Hot Springs area, especially Hot Springs Village, is one of the largest retirement communities in America outside of southern Florida.

My wife's Mam-maw went to one of his town halls to raise hell against socialized medicine. Of course, she is a Medicare recipient.

If he does this, he will not be in office after next election.
It's time for a revolution in our country. Not a revolution forged with guns and bombs but a revolution forged of compassion and altruism. A revolution that extends a hand to those who don't have and who cannot. A revolution that makes Health Care available to all those in the US.

You really need to stop this "old people against the public option are all hypocrites" thing.

The evidence that Medicare and the socialized medicine are very different is that in countries with socialized medicine, people don't get private supplements, while Medicare recipients do. I do not know why this is true, but there's obviously a good reason somewhere.

There's also the fact that when health care has to be distributed among everyone, not just the elderly, suddenly the elderly get the short end of the stick because they consume the most health care for the smallest extensions of their life; with Medicare, they get the whole stick, not the short end of it.

Man, what a dumb bitch. Protesting a bill which would cut funding to Medicare? So stupid!
