Obama to seal US-UN relationship

The meeting he is attending is on nuclear nonproliferation. In fact, would a Global Poverty bill even go through the security council?

No it wouldn't. It would probably go through UNCTAD.

Obama did some weapon proliferation work with Senator Lugar if I recall, so that gives him some experience in this area. His diplomatic work has been decent so far, getting a few minor things here and there. This is a good chance for him to show the American public what he can do.
So, would you hand your infant son over to an inexperienced Rabbi who, while not trained in anyway, wants to perform the office of a Mohel?

Somehow, if you did, I don't think you'd have to worry about the problem of grandchildren.

well I think this will be a huge firestorm that will dwarf his school speech and astroturfing.

Must admit though, he sure has made a lot of moves for a community organizer

what is so special about him that his presence is required at the Security Council?

Nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament...

And your problem with this is what exactly?

Obama was elected by the people of this country. The president is, and always has been, Chief Diplomat. Whether you like it or not, the people of this country have decided that Obama is qualified for that particular job. So bitching that he's actually going to fulfill his duties is the height of absurdity.

If you don't like that executive arrangement, you can move to England, where the head of state and head of government are divided between a queen and a prime minister.

The presidents job is to deal with foreign affairs, and receive ambassadors. Obama has simply chosen to be involved more personally. He is good at public speaking, and is well liked world wide. Those qualities make him well suited to host a meeting in the U.N.

Seal it?

Hell, I think he ought to burn it ...

I'm sorry but i do not find brown nosing to be decent diplomatic work.

But getting agreements on nuclear weapons reduction, increasing anti-proliferation agreements (particularly tightening up the leaks in the export regime) and overall getting the world powers to unify against rouge parties and terrorists is decent diplomatic work.

I fail to see where the current administration has done any of these things, or the UN (effectively) for that matter. On the other hand I do see a leader who seems to hold all other world leaders at a higher status than his own (and makes this obvious).

So therefore he shouldn't even try at the UN? What kind of logic is that? If you have not produced results because you haven't tried yet, don't try? Huh? Therefore every kid should drop out of school before even starting.

or the UN (effectively) for that matter.

You do realize that the NPT is currently done out of the UN no? That Review Conferences of the Parties to the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons meetings are UN run no? And that the NPT, despite its flaws has done wonders to reduce proliferation.

On the other hand I do see a leader who seems to hold all other world leaders at a higher status than his own (and makes this obvious).

Do you have anything other than overt Obama bashing?

Perhaps you should approach these threads as more than just a way to vent about your dislike of Obama?

This thread started as that though. It failed miserably because facts got in the way, but you can't blame the poor guy for trying to jump in with the OP with mindless Obama bashing.

You know, Obama deserves a mountain of criticism for things he has done. But this is not one of them. I don't mind people giving the President flak, but at least give the president flak for actual, real, substantial things. The recent issue about his speech is another, especially when it was exceptionally mundane and how Reagan actually pushed his economic policies on kids during his broadcasts. Where's the consistency? There should be a real simple scale. The more partisan you are, the less consistent and everyone gets measured on that.

I could go on for pages on that. I could seriously spend hours typing up a long list of complaints and venting about that, but I never get the chance because some one is creating yet another thread that is either factually just wrong, or inflammatory, or calls liberals names, or misleading...and I get caught up defending the guy from the attacks, and never get around to doing my venting about Obama.

You don't need capitalization for misleading rants!
Man can't take a joke. He'll have the French ambassador standing by.

actually, less than half the people of america thought he was qualified ;)

I suppose I have somewhat mixed sentiments about that. A permanent position on the Security Council has often been used by hegemonic political regimes ruling the U.S. to defy international consensus with their veto power.
Of which there is no legitimate criticism, as whenever 'international consensus' interferes with the interests of the US, the US -should- exercise its veto power; any leader of the US that does not should be immediately ousted.

Whatever. He got 51% of the vote and was elected President of the United States. If you don't think he's qualified, you needed to convince the voters of that last year. Now that he's president it doesn't make sense to argue he's unqualified to perform his duties such as Chief Diplomat.

I'm curious...at what point in his presidency do you think he'll be "qualified," and do you believe that being qualified necessarily entails agreeing with YOU on every single issue?

Hell, I think *I* am qualified to chair a meeting of the Security Council. I know the procedural matters well enough from Model UN, and am sure I could study up on the US government's position on whatever they're debating, given a few weeks. It really isn't that difficult.

So vent already! :2wave:

Maybe later tonight, on a break at the moment, so not enough time. I am moving soon(finally sold my farm, close week from this coming Friday, so I got to get ready to move), and that is keeping me busy. It's just my luck that I finally get called back to work, and have to get ready to move at same time.

PBO will need the assistance of foreign militaries, if he attempts to take control of the government by force. He already knows that he will not have the support of the American military.

Please tell me you are joking...

No, why else would he feel the need to be the first president to participate in a security council meeting?
