The President: Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

The rest of the speech is on the White House website...

We really best keep our children from school this day, lest they all turn into liberal Nazi youth!

In all reality though, this is exactly what anyone could and should have expected. Nothing that hasn't been said before and certainly nothing that won't be said again. As there is no mandate for showing it, I see no harm, even if you believe that it is unnecessary.

I know you're being sarcastic, but this is how it always gets started.

I have NO problems with what is contained in this speech and truly hope and wish it will have its effect even if it is only one child.

It is a message that needs telling over and over again.

Yep, there are only whack jobs on the right eh MidwestLibrul?

It's going to be interesting to see him make a speech that is geared to everyone from high school seniors to kindergarteners.
Talk about reaching out to a broad and diverse audience!
But if anyone can do it, I suspect Obama can.
Even if it's a little above the littest ones' heads, I doubt it's going to hurt them any, and they might get something out of it.
At least they'll get that our president is a nice man, who cares enough about them to talk to them and who says school is important (and that they are important, too).

It's okay I suppose. As much as I dislike Obama I can't really find fault with the speech.

Oh no, not at all...In fact there are just as many whack jobs on the left, and I make fun of them too. I only based my humor on the contents of the similar thread before the release of the speech. It's just way more fun to make fun of the crazies! I think we can agree on that!

And, the whole objective is to paint Dear Leader as a nice man, anyway. Perhaps it will win a few votes from the 15+ y/o students in 2012.

Agreed! Hope for our nations youth is something that should certainly transcend all partisan lines!

True story, but heck, it's page one out of any successful politicians playbook!

Who are you, and what have you done with our TD?

I agree with you that the contents of the speech are rather benign and think it is silly to make a HUGE deal about the President talking to the nations kids; it's that broad brush you appear to be painting with that I am speaking to.

I am not sure how anyone can think that Obama isn't a nice and personable person; I agree he is way out of his league, and economically challenged moron and likes to associate with radical elements, but I can't see anything that is "mean" or "despicable" about the man, other than his obvious arrogance.

I think the message is right on; although I am not sure of its purpose other than prepping kids for some major changes to their education coming down the pike which one can hope means a REAL effort to educate and not indoctrinate; what if we REALLY taught them math, economics and English? Wouldn’t that be radical?

:rofl

I can't help but wonder what the Libruls would have been saying had Bush done this. :doh

What was that you just said about a broad brush? ;)

This kind of speech is harmless, regardless of which party it comes out of. Kids will just be texting under there desks anyway! :rofl

I don't remember it when Bush or Reagan did it, but I would hope I would not complain. As I mentioned in another thread on this topic, I would love to see, as one example, Condaleeza Rice doing public service announcements on education. She is a perfect example of a black woman who succeeded in today's world, would make a great role model for young kids. Educational success is something I don't think should be a partisan issue, and any one doing something to encourage kids to stay in school should be praised.

Personally, I think every President should do this. It makes students feel that someone in a big position actually gives a rat's ass about their education and well-being.

I disagree, because before long, it would be just another political pulpit.

Perhaps. However, if they stick to that kind of a non-agenda driven message, I have no problems with it.

I say we don't do it all, then there's no chance of it going arigh. One of those little safegaurds that make free country safe from tyranny.

Safe from the tyranny of urging kids to stay in school and work hard? :doh

Safe from some charliton showing up on the scene and using that venue as a way to indoctrinate our children. Don't call it paranoid, acting as if it's never happened before, because it has. I say we play it safe and just stay away from the practice.

That's why I said I have no problem with it as long as they stick to that kind of a non-agenda driven message.
