S.J. couple hopes their poster inspires county’s students

S.J. couple hopes their poster inspires county’s students | Recordnet.com

Bob Tilden and his wife of 25 years, Ruth McMaster, are Democrats.

Their political affiliation, though, has nothing to do with the project they've nursed over the past seven months and are about to launch this week.

The two created a poster with Obama's image and the words, "Dropping out of school ... it's not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country."

They've printed enough 11-by-17-inch copies of the poster to distribute to high school classrooms in the four-largest county districts and are working to raise the final $1,500 to provide larger, 2-by-3-foot posters for common areas in 29 public campuses.
With the poster created, they approached San Joaquin Grassroots Action for support and fundraising help to pay for the cost of printing.

The NorCal District Council of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union paid nearly $600 for the initial printing and Vision Printing kicked in a $200 discount.

Grassroots members approached other potential donors. They also made presentations to local school boards to win approval for placement in the schools.
Does anyone else find this troubling? I don't want a poster of any politician being placed throughout public schools. This is an ad created by democrats and funded by liberal advocacy groups that is being given free space in public schools. Ridiculous.

Also, this is a bit concerning:

Their goal is to have the posters distributed and up by Sept. 8 when the president will deliver a national internet address to students across the country stressing the importance of their education.

"The timing is good right now," Tilden said. "It's a perfect storm of events for us."

Schools recently opened, Obama has the planned address - the first ever by an American president directly to students
I'm not sure what this means as I can't find much information on this topic anywhere else, but what the **** is a "national address to students?" It better not be something that teachers are making kids watch during the school day.

As an aside, these idiots in this article are the most stereotypical pseudo-intellectual dbags imaginable.

Alone the night Obama made his first address to Congress on Feb. 24, Tilden couldn't wait for McMaster to return from a class so he could replay the moment Obama said, "And dropping out of high school is no longer an option. It's not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country - and this country needs and values the talents of every American."

McMaster, who spent 16 years teaching in elementary classrooms in the Lodi Unified and is in her third year as a district instructional coach, got chills just as her husband had hours earlier.

"I was surprised," McMaster said. "We've never really had a president that valued education."
You got chills? Really? Get ****ed. And yea, Obama's the first one to value education - it's not like we had a university president with a PhD in office before.

Basically, this is an all-around crock of ****.

Related: today I went to the bookstore to get a required reading book. They had apparently already contacted the schools as all of the required reading books were stacked on a couple of tables. I look through it and happen to come across The Audacity of Hope.

Now I ask you, if Bush had written a book, would teachers have made it required reading?

I see political quotes from Politicians from both sides in High Schools all the time, I see no real reason for it to be an issue. There is nothing political about the quote either, even though if they replaced Obama's head with a book of diploma, it would be better.

The only quotes I ever saw were from politicians who had long been out of office.

Even if it were okay on that front, there's a difference between posting a quote and posting a gigantic poster with a picture of a current politician's face that was paid for by a political advocacy committee.

You obviously don't have Young Republicans at whatever school you went to. When I went to school, they painted the walls with pictures of Bush and his quotes.

I think that maybe any Young Democrat clubs in the schools should be the ones to post the signs, not the school district.

No, I don't. He's the president. Historically, it's been customary to hang the president's picture on the wall in a classroom. Is that troubling too?

What is ridiculous about hanging a poster in a school hallway that discourages children from dropping out of school and ruining their lives?

My school had a policy that prohibited overtly political things and limited those groups to posting on one particular billboard. That seems eminently reasonable to me, otherwise you get what you're describing.

I don't see a problem with this. The presidency has a certain amount of power to it, and using it for a positive message for school students I don't see a problem with. It's using the presidency for what I see as a nonpartisan positive use.

Customary where? I've never heard of such a thing. Furthermore, don't you see a difference between a picture of the president being posted regardless of party and a campaign ad being posted for a favored official?

What is ridiculous about hanging a poster in a school hallway that discourages children from dropping out of school and ruining their lives?
If that was the only goal, they could do that without being so overtly political. Look at the ****ing thing - how is that not a campaign poster? It's all in blue to symbolize the democrats, it's got a stylized Obama face reminiscent of the campaign posters, it's even got the name of the goddamn political advocacy group that paid for it on the bottom.

The guy knows exactly what he's doing - he advertises campaign activism training seminars on his blog. He's using willing school boards to take his campaigning right into public schools.

Again, if this was trying to be "non-partisan," it wouldn't look like that and it wouldn't be funded by liberal political advocacy committees.

I just don't see how you can look at this poster and not conclude that it's partisan.
