Sen. Grassley: No public option in health reform

"Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley said Monday he remains hopeful a limited health care reform measure can be negotiated, but that a small bipartisan group of senators working on the issue agrees a government-run public option won't be part of the package."

Looks as if some Senators could be caving in on the pressure of the townhall meetings. When constituents rise up to be heard, officials listen. That is very inspiring.

Is the government option in danger of being included?

I hope Democrats aren't still holding out hope of getting Chuck "kill grandma" Grassley's vote on ANY version of health reform.

It's one of two things at this point considering Enzi's and Grassley's behavior. ....Obama is incredibly stupid and naive thinking he can work with this right wing radical minority faction or he just doesn't give much of a damn about fighting for health care.

"right wing radical minority faction"? You realize that about half of the country is against the public option right?

    Oh? You sure about that?..

In any health care proposal, how important do you feel it is to give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance--extremely important, quite important, not that important, or not at all important?

    Extremely Important 58%
    Quite Important 19%

    SurveyUSA News Poll #15699

Among the 1,000 Democrats, Republicans and independents surveyed on Aug. 12 and 13, 79 percent say they believe a federal government health insurance option should be available for people to buy.

Nope, they aren't. We will now go around the Republicans.
It's time for a revolution in our country. Not a revolution forged with guns and bombs but a revolution forged of compassion and altruism. A revolution that extends a hand to those who don't have and who cannot. A revolution that makes Health Care available to all those in the US.

    I hope you are right.

The way I see it the Blue Dogs in the House can be split. You would only need around 12 of the 52 to vote in favor of the Public Option. That many at least could be found in the Northeast States and California.

Then, in the Senate getting to 50 would not be an issue at all.

The cloture vote is where the hurdle is.

I doubt Collins and Snowe would vote against cloture. Kennedy will likely have been replaced by this point.

The real question is how many Dems would vote against cloture? I don't see more than a few.

So odds are close to 50/50 now....with only a half-assed effort on Obama's part.

Remember when Obama made some comments a couple weeks ago saying that he'd be open to a plan without a public option? Did congressional Republicans applaud his decision? HELL NO. They moved almost immediately to attacking the "compromise" plan - the nationwide non-profit co-ops.

Obviously most Republicans in Congress are totally unwilling to compromise on anything. If Obama needs to jettison the public option to get the last remaining Democratic senators on board, that is unfortunate but necessary. But he should completely give up hope of getting Republicans like Chuck Grassley on board, and stop negotiating with him at all.

Sure, a lot of Americans like the idea of a public option, but once it gets closer to reality, they invariably start to back away.
