The British government decided it was “in the overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom” to make Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, eligible for return to Libya, leaked ministerial letters reveal.

Gordon Brown’s government made the decision after discussions between Libya and BP over a multi-million-pound oil exploration deal had hit difficulties. These were resolved soon afterwards.

The letters were sent two years ago by Jack Straw, the justice secretary, to Kenny MacAskill, his counterpart in Scotland, who has been widely criticised for taking the formal decision to permit Megrahi’s release.

The correspondence makes it plain that the key decision to include Megrahi in a deal with Libya to allow prisoners to return home was, in fact, taken in London for British national interests

Sorry to break up the "on topic love fest here" :roll:, but this makes me ****ing sick to my stomach. That an injustice would occur for an oil contract. Where are the hordes of screaming lefties that claimed that the Iraq was just over oil? IMO, this is far more egregious than that claim. All this was is a modern day example of negotiating with terrorists, and that's exactly how the terrorists will view it. Oil will become the future currency, as if it isn't already.

in the interests of British Petroleum a democratic government in Iran was overthrown a while back. they tried to do it again just recently but failed. They helped USA murder a million innocent Iraqis for oil. They bombed their own citizens on 7/7 to keep the agenda alive.

And anybody is STILL surprised that they would have "injustice for oil" ?

That bomber is merely an amateur when it comes to murdering innocent people for political reasons as compared to British government.

You should be thankful that they merely released somebody who bombed planes for oil instead of taking some planes down on their own to boost their oil profits. That idea wouldn't be exactly new ( 9/11 anybody ? ).

This is irrelevant. Megrahi was freed on compassionate release by the Scottish executive, not as part of a prisoner exchange deal brokered by the UK government.

These leaked letters refer to the agreement which made Megrahi eligible for transfer as part of the prisoner exchange deal which was signed years ago. Megrahi was not released under that agreement.

Western Europe has been whoring for oil for quite some time, now. Their approach has been to become more like those who have the oil, and to represent their interests and prejudices.

THe United States has taken a different approach -- one more direct than indirect -- but the compromizes of ideals for that beloved crude are no less.
 
He was dieing.Alot of people don't even beleive he was guilty.Some people think the Scottish courts were influenced by America and he was used as a scapegoat
