When 130 million credit/debit card #'s can be stolen something has to be done. This is not about people hacking a phone system to see if they can this is people ripping fellow citizens off.

Well, being that they have been involved in about 80% of the civil liberties cases over the last 75 years, that would be a mistake.

This is a bad idea. Companies with sufficient bandwidth in their data centers that which a cyber attack on the United States government could be launched from have a significant financial motive to prevent their networks from being compromised in the first place. Thus while the risk of cyber attack against the United States is a significant one and while I am sure the intentions behind this bill are good in that they are trying to defend the United States against such a costly attack, its still unnecessary.

However, I am also sure that many of the same people that excused warrantless wiretaps, something much more dangerous than this bill in terms of its potential to infringe upon civil liberties, are many of the same people that are throwing a fit over this.

Doesn't the government already control all IP addresses and domain names anyway? From what I understand we just lease these from the government. So essentially they could easily shut down the internet by temporarily freezing our access to IP Addresses. I could be over simplifying this though...

    It's not a government conspiracy.
I know. I'm saying they can use the analog frequencies in case of emergency WITHOUT necessarily interfering with our televisions. However I must say, since when did the gov't mandate anything because of trends in the private sector silly. It simply has to do with the extra available frequencies.

But it's not just about individual bank accts; it's about corporate financial records, shutting down communications lines and power grids, turning off water supplies, taking over satelites (communications and defense). Nearly everything we do now is done via some form of electronic circuitry or is inter-connected to the Internet. If you don't give due consideration to cyber-security at corporate or government levels and give real considerations as to what to do where national security is concerned, you've placed yourselves and this country way behind the 8-ball.

    A) I am not giving away any rights. I am understanding that emergency situations should have plans of action.

    B) Nowhere in this thread have I attacked Republicans. Intellectual honesty will make your point better than lies and exaggeration any day.

Declared by the president, which may or may not be Barack Obama at the time. Do you really think democrats are so dumb as to give the next republican president powers that could be used against us without safeguards?

They ultimately allocate IPs to tier one providers. However, they have no way of "freezing our access to IP Addresses". In order for the government to actually shut down access to a data center in the event of an emergency, they would have to have access to provisioning with the providers.
