NY dealers pull out of clunkers program

NY dealers pull out of clunkers program
Hundreds of auto dealers in the New York area have withdrawn from the government's Cash for Clunkers program, citing delays in getting reimbursed by the government, a dealership group said Wednesday.

The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, which represents dealerships in the New York metro area, said about half its 425 members have left the program because they cannot afford to offer more rebates. They're also worried about getting repaid.
Looks like Cash for Clunkers is itself a clunker. As with so many things, the devil is always in the details--in this case the detail is that dealers aren't in a position to be waiting on government rebate checks for very long.

Well yes. They borrow the money to buy the cars from the auto makers. When the car is sold they HAVE to pay the bank back right away. So that $4,500 comes out of pocket. Given the poor financial showing for dealers over the last year, if they sell a significant number of cars they will get to the point where they cannot afford to front the money anymore while waiting for Uncle Sam to send the check along.
Wow. Am I awesome or what?

This program was junk from the start, hopefully dealerships up by me follow suit.

So 200ish out of how many across the nation? I see that National Automobile Dealers Association represents about 43,000 dealerships across the country, so we are talking a minuscule percentage of dealerships doing this.

By the way, from NADA's website:

DOT has informed NADA that it will commit to deploy an additional 1,000 employees to speed up its processing efforts.
There is a problem, as there is in every large program when it starts, and the problem is being worked on.

I would like to correct a statement here; "in this case the detail is that dealers aren't in a position to be waiting on Tax Payer funded rebate checks for very long."

This is another example of government efficiency... The same stellar efficiency we can expect if they are allowed to take over health care.

These clowns can't even give money away without dicking it up. And we want them run healthcare?

Re: NY dealers pull out of clunkers program

    1. They just can't do ANYTHING right

    2. A piddly little program like CLUNKERS

    3. We'd rather NOT take the "free" money, says the Greater New York Automobile Dealers, Assn

    4. Taking it, or not taking it---same thing

    5. Cuz they don't PAY UP, they just PROMISE

    6. Meanwhile, we're stuck with all these CLUNKERS which we already DESTROYED, per mandate

    7. And a ten foot tall pile of PAPERWORK which the president's DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION has kicked back to us

    8. We're, meanwhile, out the cash out the door, our bottom line bouncing near bankruptcy

    9. Only TWO PERCENT of claims have been MADE GOOD

    10. And 4 of 5 applications have been REJECTED for TECHNICALITY

    11. A disaster for businesses trying to stay afloat in tuff times

    12. A public relations nightmare for a White House struggling with COMPETENCE issues

    13. And another major setback to leadership's designs to take over HEALTH CARE, 16% of the US economy, and the physical and emotional well being of every American (and otherwise resident) man, woman and child

    14. If they can't MANAGE a concept as concise as clunkers...
