Political columnist Robert Novak dies at 78

he was a giant, a great reporter for half a decade

a columnist who worked the phones frantically, getting insider scoops

THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS, he loved it

born jewish, a recent convert to catholicism

conservative registered democrat (so his vote would matter in dc, his home)

critic of overly close american ties to israel

cut capital gains, his mantra

always wore a thousand dollars worth of clothes immaculately manicured

how they hated him

LOL!

he's with rollie now

rip, mr novak, you did a GREAT job!

I used to love watching him run up the score on Begala day after day after day.

Well done, Mr. Novak. Rest in peace.

Bob Novak was a class act and one of those talking heads who knew of what he talked abobut. he was respected not only by those who disagreed him but importently by those who disagreed with him.

Novak was a professional and he started professional life as a reporter.

Even people such as 'CUE BALL' James Carville said "What you saw on television was an ideological guy, a fire-breathing right-wing guy," But Novak "still had the sort of ethos of the reporter."

Many people forget what is stated in the article I linked above "While staunchly conservative, Novak opposed the invasion (( Iraq )) and was frequently critical of the Bush administration. "

Novak was a thinking man therefore he was a thinking conservative.

I know that he developed the show Crossfire and he was also on CAPITAL GANG. Novak brought not only class but intelligence to the political debate.

You did not have to agree with Bob Novak on all issues in order to respect he earned the respect long ago and kept earning it when he appeared on political shows.

Forever Rememberance !!! Bob !!! Forever Rememberance !!!

I can't say that I agreed with Novak too much but he did seem to have a kind of integrity and was not prone to simply repeating the party line. I still have difficulty understanding why anyone would out an undercover CIA operative for any reason other than the obvious. But I shall not speak ill of the dead, RIP mr Novak, if more conservative media types were like him I would have a lot more respect for them.

Uhhh . . . too late.

Or is it "I'm going to get in this one dig first, and THEN I'm shall not speak ill of the dead"?

I could have done much much worse. More than just "scooter" deserved jail time for that dangerous political maneuver.

I liked Novak, until he stirred up the Valerie Plame hornet nest. After that, he was just another dumbass reporter than didn't know when to just shut the hell up.

I thanked your post and then took it away. I don't wish him "rest in peace." That's all I will say.

In the past couple of years, Conservatives have lost Buckley and Novak. There won't be anyone to replace these thinking Conservative icons for a long time, and the Conservative movement is now missing 2 important mouthpieces of its ideology. Today is a sad day.

Who will replace Novak or Buckley? It won't be the likes of Coulter, Beck, Limbaugh, or Hannity, who don't think any issue out at all, but only repeat scripted talking points like trained parrots, without using a single cell in their brains.

May God bless you, Robert. You will be sorely missed.

I have to say my favorite episode of Crossfire was when Frank Zappa was on going toe to toe with Novak

Class, it's what you don't bring to this forum...

I don't have any problem with someone labeling my response as classless. In fact, I take it as a compliment. :2wave:

I missed that one. Anyone remember Bill Press on Xfire ? I could not stand him since Bill Press reminded me of a liberal Saun Vannity !!!

This article cannot be correct; Novak was hardly the "diehard Conservative."

Novak was a registered Democrat despite his conservative political views. He held more centrist views in his early career, and he supported the Democratic presidential candidacies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, of whom he was a friend.

Novak's views turned further rightward through the 1970s, but Novak remained strongly critical towards Ronald Reagan and his supply side economics in the early 1980s

He also generally tended toward low-tax, small-government libertarian views, but his disagreements with mainstream Republicans and neoconservatives—specifically his opposition to the Iraq War[12]— earned him the label of being a "paleoconservative".

Novak expressed support for Ron Paul's bid for the presidency.[13] Novak was a hard-line social conservative as well, holding pro-life and anti-divorce views.

he was the opposite of a neo con

he was a genghis con, i say with great affection

traditional isolationist conservative

he opposed 41's war, even

so did pat

very, very few on the right stood up against herbert walker's venture on behalf of kuwait

novak was a great man

jfk was a long time ago, america was a very different place

and kennedy was a completely different dem

everything changed in 68, in chicago, when the far left captured the party

by 72, mcgovern

it took centrist bill clinton to bring it back, the NEW DEMOCRAT

democratic leadership council, DLC---crucial to the success of bubba

triangulation, baby! (or, bubba!)

obama, tho, has swung wider than SF nance

Are you people being serious? respect a person that put our people in harms way? A person that devulged the identity of undercover agent, and everyone who worked with her, putting all Americans in danger. He deserves nothing except bringing him back to life to face execution.
