Conservatives Now Outnumber Liberals in All 50 States, Says Gallup Poll

(CNSNews.com) - Self-identified conservatives outnumber self-identified liberals in all 50 states of the union, according to the Gallup Poll.

At the same time, more Americans nationwide are saying this year that they are conservative than have made that claim in any of the last four years.

In 2009, 40% percent of respondents in Gallup surveys that have interviewed more than 160,000 Americans have said that they are either “conservative” (31%) or “very conservative” (9%). That is the highest percentage in any year since 2004.

Only 21% have told Gallup they are liberal, including 16% who say they are “liberal” and 5% who say they are “very liberal.”

Thirty-five percent of Americans say they are moderate

More Americans are according to this poll, "Conservative", that is more so than liberal, an even moreso than "moderate".....

Is this in your opinion a backlash to Obama's seemingly failure after failure, or do you think it has more to do with the reflection that this country is indeed. Center-right?

What say you.

this must explain how increasingly dull Americans are becoming. :p

I wonder if Gallup will do a companion poll showing people's perceptions of their Congressmen and Senators.

Do conservative people elect liberal politicians?

Most people that call themselves moderate, conservatives would call liberal.

I think it all has to do with the Democratic party losing people to the independents like the Jews leaving Egypt.

Yup. My 80-year-old grandmother wouldn't leave the Democratic party for anything. She worshiped Bill Clinton.

Uh, she left the party. She hates Pelosi, and she can't believe her party has gone "haywire", as she puts it.

I suspect it may simply be a changing of terminology. It would be nice to compare them to their voting habits. Based on the last election, it would seem that a bunch of conservatives may have voted for Obama. It could be that demonizing the term liberal has caused people to change their labels even if their politics haven't changed at all.

Now you just need a political party with a conservative platform and you'd be set.

This poll really doesn't mean much in that it's dependent upon the voters own idea of what conservative, liberal, and moderate are. Many programs that conservatives find wasteful liberals find valuable, and vice versa.

They whole point being the poll is too subjective and doesn't actually say anything regarding their actual tendencies or whether or not this signals any move in party or ideological line up.

And here's why I say this. Using polls as a measuring stick, for so many people claiming to be conservative, a majority still approve of President Obama's job performance (this includes his amazingly aggressive liberal agenda and spending practices).

Real Clear Politics-President Obama Job Approval. 53.4% approve, 40.3% disapprove, with a +13.1. If the majority of Americans (according to this poll) were truly conservative Obama's approval numbers should be much worse.

I don't think the poll really say anything profound about the state of our nation under Obama.

The poll is not surprising. America has always been a conservative nation. So why, then do Democrats seem to win much of the time? Easy answer to that one. When Republicans abandon Conservatism, the people speak up at the ballot box (or by not voting at all), and Republicans then lose.

If "conservatives" really believe that Dana, then they should nominate the most conservative candidate that they possibly can for the GOP....and see where that gets them. Purge the GOP of moderates and independents and make it truly a "conservative" party.

I'd say it's probably more of just the general shift against whoever is in power. It's not good for a party to have control of all 3 branches when things aren't going well.

This is how party ID polls always work, because there's really no other way to do it. You're right that it's not ideal in terms of a static conclusion, but it is useful to look at trends.

When the Republicans again gain power, there will be similar polls showing that people are "now" turning against conservatives.

The pendulum swings. Anyone who thinks either party is "finished" or permanently in power is deluded.

Yep, another recent poll had democrats outnumbering republican by huge margins, even in states like texas.

Yes, what he said.

I was simply trying to have a discussion until you got your panties in a knot.

Clearly you are overwhelmed in these discussions, so I've been trying to take it easy on ya.

Why don’t people use polls from real polling companies?… here is one with a track record for accuracy.
