The City of Chicago will basically be closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay, according to a release from the Office of Budget and Management. City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices will be closed.

Emergency service providers including police, firefighters and paramedics will be working at full strength, but most services not directly related to public safety, including street sweeping, will not be provided, the release said.

That also includes garbage pickup. Residents who receive regular collection on Mondays should expect trash to be picked up the following day, the release said. Some other customers may experience a one-day delay as collectors catch up.

As part of the 2009 budget, three reduced-service days were planned for 2009, days which are unpaid for all affected employees -- the Friday after Thanksgiving; Christmas Eve; and New Year's Eve. The City Council recently approved moving the reduced-service day planned for New Year's Eve to Monday.

The 2009 budget anticipates saving $8.3 million due to the reduced-service days.

In addition to reduced service days, all non-union employees were asked to take a series of furlough days and unpaid holidays, and most non-sworn union employees agreed to similar unpaid time off.

What does President Obama have to do it at all? This is drastic solution to a serious problem and it is worthy of discussion but not in the terms of partisan blame assignment.

did you see, for instance, that one of obama's first moves as president was to promote the supt of chicago's public schools to Ed Secty?

this was totally bizarre, as windy city's schools, in addition to abysmally embarrassing test scores, have been plagued by a wave of violence, very worrisome, the last several years

Sounds like they're trying to solve their budget crisis in Chicago. This may or may not be the best way to do it, but why do you so casually dismiss the idea?

Prof just gets pissy when he doesn't get to have his regular session with his doctor. Calm down pal, Doctor will be back to work on Tuesday, you'll see him then. The nurses and orderlies will be there all day if you need anything.

By the same note I guess any city having budget troubles right now should mark any politician from that state as a corrupt failure? That would be all of them.

Enough of this partisan crap. You could have posted a story telling of the budget woes in nearly every city and state and have an intelligent discussion on how best to scale back services to cover the shortfall. Instead you took a story about the city where your hated president came from and attempted to use it as an example of why you think he is unworthy. You don't care about the problem at all, you are just looking for more ammo to use against the president no matter how far fetched and tenuous.

How would you say our current energy policy is going?

Yer boy had a secret meeting with big pharma last week on health care reform. Whatcha think about that? At least Bush's energy policy put folks to work, instead of putting them in the unemployment line.

Yeah, sarcasm translates poorly over the internet.

Also, Prof, you speak as if Chicago was the only influence in Obama's life, as if he didn't exist before Chicago. He in fact was not born out of the depths of Hell. He happened to have many influences before Chicago, be it his Mother, his grandparents, his teachers, etc. Saying that because Obama spent some time in the Windy City that he himself must be corrupt is stretching it.
 
yes, obama held a secret meeting (july 7) with reps from PhRMA which accomplished quite a lot

1. he lied about it, tried to deny the meeting took place

2. he outraged congress which sees his going over their heads in the dark and committing them to outrageous agreements as approaching dictatorial

3. he promised PhRMA that he would oppose congressional efforts to reduce drug costs

4. he would oppose importation of meds from Canada

5. he'd halt rebates in Medicare Plan D which would cost the pharmaceuticals billions in reimbursements

6. he agreed to "non intereference," in other words, he agreed to the "status quo," pledging the govt not to press phrma to negotiatate downward drug prices

7. he was promised in return up to but not more than 80 bil in price discounts to the public for pills over the next 10 years

8. he also blatantly broke several basic campaign vows---his promise to drive down drug prices, for one

9. also, his commitment to conduct negotiations in the open

10. he's also looking forward to a $150 million dollar ad campaign (more than mccain spent in all 08) by phrma pushing obamacare

11. congress is in revolt over this, led by pelosi, waxman, sharrod brown and senator byron dorgan

Chicago is not the most corrupt city in the USA. If it was, it would look like New Orleans more and not an Alpha city of the WORLD.
And another thing, you wouldn't want for a city like Chicago to be broke, if it was then all you republican states would be living in a sewer filth because the money Chicagoans and area residents give to the federal government would stop.

Wow!! I never thought that blind partisanship would cause someone to actually post something so far out. President Obama is from Chicago so why not blame him for the great Chicago fire instead of Mrs. O'Leary's cow. Wasn't Al Cpone from Chicago! Maybe you can claim that POTUS palled around with Al.
