A secret DNA test proves former presidential candidate John Edwards is the father of his former campaign aide's baby, the National Enquirer reported Wednesday.

The Enquirer, which last year broke the story of Edwards' affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter, said the test was taken after Hunter tried to get financial help from Edwards for her 18-month-old daughter, Frances.

Hunter apparently agreed to testify to a federal grand jury investigating whether Edwards broke campaign finance law by paying "hush" money to Hunter and another aide who claimed paternity of the child. Hunter was spotted last week in Raleigh, N.C., entering a federal courthouse, where she spent nine hours.

Edwards adamantly denied during a confessional interview with ABC News last summer that he had fathered a child with Hunter, and he said he welcomed a paternity test. His wife, Elizabeth, has said while promoting her book that she doesn't know if her husband is the father.

Former Edwards aide Andrew Young, who made a similar courthouse visit while the grand jury was sitting last month, said in 2007 he was the child's father. Hunter said around the same time that Young was the father and the birth certificate does not list a father's name.

Now if we could only find out who the father of Michael's children are.

I feel bad for his family. Edward's family. Not Michael's.

I wish Edwards happiness; I'm sorry his teenage son died, and that his wife is dying. He did a disreputable thing here, but I hope his new child brings a ray of happiness into a life that's known too much sorrow.

Secret DNA tests? The National Enquirer was in fact correct about the affair, but that is one true story among hundreds of lies. Until someone with a shred of credibility corroborates the story, I am not going to trust a tabloid magazine who doesn't even mention the source. Its a rather moot point anyway. Edwards showed himself to be scumbag with the affair, this just determines if he was a complete moron as well.

I do feel sorry for Elizabeth Edwards, and her children. As for John Edwards, I hope this is the end of his public career. He is one of those rare politicians that could cause me to stay home on election day, or vote for the Monster Raving Loony party.

Just heard on Fox that he plans on admitting to it. Talk about a man who never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Me too. My gosh. It would be absolutely devastating to me if my husband fathered a child with another woman. I have said in the past that I might be able to forgive him if he was unfaithful to me. However, if he produced another child due to his unfaithfulness, I don't think I could live with that.

That too. It would have been much better for his family and for his career if he'd owned up in the first place.

seems the media is giving this attention.....where did you see it? and really, what attention does it warrant NOW? he doesn't hold office and never will, god willing.

1. mr edwards is under grand jury investigation for paying his mistress with campaign funds

2. he played up his wife's serious health problems for public sympathy exactly while all this crap was going on, apparently

3. he recently tried, quixote like, to REVIVE his defunct career

4. he's being investigated cuz his campaign director said HE's the source of the what-looks-like hush money, 6 figures worth, personally

5. if that's not true, edwards is in serious legal trouble

6. he's being investigated cuz that other guy, young, said HE was the baby's father

7. the point---the mistress entered grand jury deliberations last week WITH THE BABY IN TOW

8. certainly not bringing the little love bundle cuzza daycare concerns

Not that I have followed it or anything, but I was unaware that therewas any doubt about it. I did not realize that Mr. Edwards was denying it.
Everything I had heard or read in passing lead me to believe that the baby was his.

I will say the same thing I have said about every politician caught in an affair: It ain't none of our business. We worry too much about what politicians do on their own time.

mark sanford is another example of media obsessing

there's a real chance he's going TO JAIL, he's in that much trouble

the media---shame, shame---never covered him

for obvious political reasons

If anyone committed perjury on this matter, they should, of course, be prosecuted, and if Edwards did, he should certainly be disbarred.

Hell, Edwards shoudl have been disbarred for "channelling" those dead babies that made him rich.
