White House Says Girl With Campaign Ties Chosen at 'Random' to Speak at Obama Town Ha

Facing a barrage of questions Wednesday over the friendliness of the audience at President Obama's New Hampshire town hall meeting, the White House insisted that all questions were selected at random -- including one from an 11-year-old girl whose mother worked as an Obama organizer.

Julia Hall of Malden, Mass., grabbed the microphone Tuesday during Obama's town hall meeting in Portsmouth, N.H., and told the president she saw signs "outside saying mean things about reforming health care" as she walked into the building.

"How do kids know what is true and why do people want a new system that can, that help more of us?" she asked Obama.

Kathleen Manning Hall, Julia Hall's mother and a coordinator of Massachusetts Women for Obama during the campaign, was seated next to the girl as she asked the question -- prompting some to question whether Obama recognized the girl or her mother.

But thousands of organizers worked for Obama during the campaign, White House spokesman Reid Cherlin said, dismissing suggestions that the president knew those who questioned him on Tuesday.

"The president selected questions at random, as he always does," Cherlin told FOXNews.com.

The friendliness of the audience at Obama's event was in stark contrast to the often rowdy and antagonistic crowds that attended similar events held around the country by members of Congress.

As an organizer and donor, Manning Hall had previously met first lady Michelle Obama, Obama daughters, Sasha and Malia, and Vice President Biden, according to a report published Wednesday in the Boston Globe. And her daughter also attended this year's White House East egg hunt, according to WCVB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Boston.

Manning Hall reportedly told the Boston Globe that she was "shocked" when her daughter said she wanted to ask the president a question -- and that the two wrote it down before the town hall meeting began.

Julia Hall's question at the town hall meeting prompted Obama to attempt to refute what he called the "underlying fear" among Americans "that people somehow won't get the care they need."

Depends on what you mean by "staged".

Did Obama arrange the event? Yes and hence it is staged. It was not a random meeting with the President.

Did Obama or his people invite people to said event that they knew would ask the "correct" questions? Most likely, all politicians do that as I have shown regardless of political colour. And as I stated, I do not like this approach one bit, but I accept that it happens on both sides.

Did Obama have the questions beforehand and approve them? Not seen any evidence of that other than speculation from the right. On the other hand if he had, then it was even more "staged" much like the examples from Republican examples I gave where the questions were pre approved. As I also stated, I do not agree with this method either by any means, but I understand that it happens.

Does the questions at such events have credibility issues because of the way the event is held? Depends on the questions, who asked them and especially how they were asked and this goes for all events.

If the questions is screamed something like this.. "Obama is a socialist and I dont want to live in a socialist nation bla bla bla bla " then yes there is a huge credibility issue of that person. Acting like agitator is not a good thing regardless if it is left or right wing.

If the question is civilized and an actual question then it is fully legit regardless of who asks it. The goal is to get information out there no? You might not agree with the answer but that is your right to do so, but that does not change the fact that any question with answer that is done in a civil tone is part of democracy. That is even if the question is something like this.. in a civil tone. "Is it true that my medicare will be taken away?" Yes that is a fully legit question due to the amount of disinformation out there.

Now there are politicians that use "legit" questions to get policy jabs at other politicians.. Bush used his gay prostitute planted journalist for that among other things, and I have no doubt that Obama has his own "version" out there giving him softball questions when he needs them. It dont make it right but it is a fact of political life in the US (and other places). But I have yet to hear the right be critical of their own people for using such methods.. but they are more than eager to go after the left when they use such methods... double standard?

As I stated, I dont like politicians of any colour "packing" a town hall setting with supporters to gain positive media coverage with the "right questions", but I am not so naive to ignore the fact that both sides do it and as you can see I am willing to be critical of both.. are you?

I'm not going to assume that this woman was a plant, although there is more evidence for her it seems then there was for any of the other republican "plants". I haven't assumed with the Reps, I won't for the Dem's.

What I am interested is to hear what Sam_W, Formerroadie, Windovervocalcords, and Goldendog have to say about this. I think that'd be VERY interesting to read and very, very telling about how intellectually honest they are about their own side.

Liberals are just bad at getting a consensus. If Obama would have started this all off with - "first thing we're going to do is stop paying for the health care of illegal immigrants." That would have gone over excellently with a whole lot of conservatives. They would have immediately started liking this health plan.

How can you let granny go when you can't let illegals go? It's outrageous! It's "evil!"

Then he could have said, "We're going to get all these people who can well afford health insurance but don't contribute to start contributing. There's no reason they should not contribute to the cost of our health care."

And then said something about the necessity of a free market plan. Republicans wouldn't have immediately been so against all this.

But nope, he has divided the country (as if we aren't divided enough!) seemingly on purpose. Obviously his plan would not be acceptable to conservatives and conservatives are a majority of our citizens, so says Mr. Gallop.

Same with the global warming situation. Who decided it would be a good idea to have somebody that the conservatives hate introduce this concern? That all got nowhere fast!
