Jewellery raid haul put at 40m - 2nd biggest robbery

Robbers stole nearly 40m of items from a London jewellers in what police say was Britain's second biggest robbery.

Two men with handguns threatened staff at Graff jewellers in New Bond Street on 6 August before taking 43 items.

They dragged a female member of staff outside as they left the shop and fired a shot, although no-one was injured.

CCTV images of the two men have been issued. The 40m haul is exceeded only by the 53m raid on a Securitas depot in Kent in 2006, a Met spokesman said.

Its impractical to have functioning store than can actually deal with armed robbery. You have to have your merchandise out on display and give people access to your store, plus have staff that can easily access the good. Worse, in a high end store like this, security measures that inconvenience or annoy the customers can't be tolerated. Armed guards are useless, as its not in the stores interest to start a gunfight. However, they do have insurance for this sort of thing, which by far the most practical solution.

It's very easy to rob a bank. The employees will actually help you with w/e you tell them to do.
However, getting away with it is another matter.
    I may be wrong.

The investigative strategy seems to be a bit lacking:

Det Ch Insp Pam Mace from the Flying Squad said: "This was a well planned robbery with a number of vehicles used to help the robbers escape.

"These men are extremely dangerous and fired at least two shots in busy London streets as they made their getaway.

"Someone knows who these men are, they would undoubtedly have spoken about it beforehand or boasted about it afterwards."
If someone is sophisticated enough to pull off a $60m heist involving multiple getaway vehicles and tons of planning, they're probably not walking around their neighborhood bragging about it to everyone who will listen.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
