Obama baby boom: Predicted surge in births goes bust

On Nov. 4, the hope and happiness seemed boundless for supporters of President-elect Barack Obama, leading some to speculate, with a wink and a nod, that in nine months there would be a virtual Obama baby boom -- a celebratory uptick in the national birthrate.

But now, 40 weeks later -- the average human gestation period -- MSNBC is reporting the prediction has largely been nothing more than, well, false hope. In reality, experts said, a generation is not borne from one night.

In Chicago, ground zero for Obama's election celebration, area hospitals confirm that they have not seen a noticeable surge in births.

"We definitely did not see that here," said Chris James, a spokesman for the University of Chicago Medical Center. Neither had staff at Edward Hospital in Naperville, said Brian Davis, vice president of the hospital. And while nurses at Rush University Medical Center were unusually busy last week, "babies are unpredictable," spokeswoman Kim Waterman said. "You can't tie it back to a certain date."

So wait. let me get this straight. The fact that nothing happened, is news? seriously, did anyone remember anything about an obama baby boom? Is it me or is this the one of the most non news news stories ever?

The news to me is that any one was dumb enough to make such a prediction. I notice the article did not mention who these people are. I did like this though for some reason:

In 2008, the name Barack set what's believed to be a record for the Social Security Administration's annual Most Popular Baby Names list by skyrocketing more than 10,000 spots on the list, from No. 12,535 in 2007 to No. 2,409 in 2008. And the Social Security Administration predicts the name will even crack the top 1,000 this year.

I wonder who wasted a few minutes of their life looking that fact up.

 so this story is even using "anonymous sources" to relay non-news.

This is why I will never name any of my kids Barack:

The obama baby boom theory is news to me. It would have been frickin hilarious if it actually happened, though

Apparently baby names are a somewhat big deal. They're my mother's hobby, and she visits one baby name message board that's bigger than DP

The data is fairly easy to attain as a result

Ethan is number three? I've only met a handful of Ethans in my entire life. And Chloe?

According to that, Chloe is the number 10 most popular female name. Who in the world would hate their baby daughter so much to name her Chloe?
Not me. With or without the umlaut.

Keep in mind that these are the most popular names for babies being born NOW...not necessarily the most popular names for babies being born in whatever year you were born (i.e. the people you're most likely to meet).

Names go in and out of style all the time. A lot of the most popular names today were virtually unheard of just a decade ago...and many names of my generation (early-mid 1980s) have fallen out of favor today. Like the #4 female name today is Madison. I don't think I've ever met someone named Madison in my entire life (due to the generational gap), and I would probably think it was a bizarre name if I met someone my age named Madison.

I don't know why, but the name Chole has got me thinking about Molly Ringworm, my least favorite actress ever. She looks like a Chloe.

Also, the really trendy names often don't show up as high as they should because of the spelling bastardizations that are so popular. The most popular boys' name right now is actually Aidan, but once you split that into Aiden Ayden Aydan etc etc etc it doesn't rank as high

I know I'm going to piss someone off with this, but I always thought these unique spellings were ridiculous. I always look at a person with a name spelled wrong and figure their parents couldn't spell or something.
