HAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba, in the grip of a serious economic crisis, is running short of toilet paper and may not get sufficient supplies until the end of the year, officials with state-run companies said on Friday.
Officials said they were lowering the prices of 24 basic goods to help Cubans get through the difficulties provoked in part by the global financial crisis and three destructive hurricanes that struck the island last year.
Cuba's financial reserves have been depleted by increased spending for imports and reduced export income, which has forced the communist-led government to take extraordinary measures to keep the economy afloat.
"The corporation has taken all the steps so that at the end of the year there will be an important importation of toilet paper," an official with state conglomerate Cimex said on state-run Radio Rebelde.
The shipment will enable the state-run company "to supply this demand that today is presenting problems," he said.
Cuba both imports toilet paper and produces its own, but does not currently have enough raw materials to make it, he said.

:doh Something smells in Cuba. Good thing they have palm leaves. Anyone have ideas for a solution to this problem?

They can use their hand and water, like the other 80% of the world.

As long as they wash their hands good, what does toilet paper have to do with health care?

Basic sanitation has nothing to do with health care?

Next thing you know they won't even have a pot to piss in.

Ah, the glories of communism!

Cholera
Hepatitis
Dysentery

Other than that, not too much.

Toilet paper isn't everything, but everthing is toilet paper.

The words corn cob come to mind.

Nah, I hope they're able to get what they need to either make their own or import the finished product. I can't imagine doing without it.

It's not just Cuba. Most of the caribbean islands count on the strength of the dollar for it's own currency also even a small drop in tourism or export prices is a huge hit. All of the islands import most of their food and essentials, when the dollar fell so did their buying power.

The entire region is suffering in this recession.

We'll send them our old Sears catalogs.

Anyone have ideas for a solution to this problem?

I don't, but it sounds like Raul does:

Raul Castro, who replaced his ailing older brother Fidel Castro as president last year, also has complained that Cuba's productivity is too low.

He has taken various steps to boost output, including putting more state-owned land in private hands and pushing for salaries to be based on productivity.

:rofl

Another victory for communism.

Smells sorta like ... CAPITALISM! Who'd have thunk it!

Communism = EPIC FAIL.

They could use copies of CASTRO'S speeches, das Kapital, and the pages of Communist failures in Cuba.

Or poison ivy leafs would be nice. Shiney side up!!!

Time for a humanitarian mission, folks. Let's draft Mr. Whipple.

That sounds like a ****ty situation.

Sorry, somebody had to say it.

Basic sanitation has nothing to do with health care?

Has it occurred to people like you that it's possible to not use health care and still be sanitary? Not only that, that it's possible to be MORE sanitary without using toilet paper?

Geeze, the ignorance of people. Do you think the entire world uses toilet paper?

Let them emulate the holy Prophet Muhammad, the uswa hasana, the perfect model and excellent example for emulation by using their left hands like virtually all pious Muslims the world over do.

While it's of course possible to have a basic level of sanitation without things like toilet paper, I think it's fairly safe to say that the level of sanitation/health care in a country where they can't afford to buy/make enough toilet paper is going to suffer.

Yes there is a solution; get rid of the corrupt Communist leadership that has run this country into the ground with their asinine policies. :2wave:
