The Prime Minister claimed the country's values are still based on traditional religious teachings, and said it would be wrong if the devout were forced to keep their beliefs private.

His comments, made in an interview with a Christian radio station, come amid growing concern that public sector employees are being punished for acting according to their faith.

"In Britain we are not a secular state as France is, or some other countries. It's true that the role of official institutions changes from time to time, but I would submit that the values that all of us think important – if you held a survey around the country of what people thought was important, what it is they really believed in, these would come back to Judeo-Christian values, and the values that underpin all the faiths that diverse groups in our society feel part of."

His predecessor, Tony Blair, famously did not "do God" while in Downing Street but soon after stepping down converted to Roman Catholicism and set up a faith foundation in the hope of promoting religion as a "powerful force for good".

Its a shame you didn't follow Blair's lead on this Brown.

Lol, in all my years of living in France, I never thought they were as much secular, as more just basically not giving a bleep about getting up on Sunday to go to some church. Their secularism has more to do with just a general interest in participation in religious activities. I never really could grasp the root of this, but Sunday's here are the worst time to drive with all the 20 mile per hour below the speed limit morons on their way to church. There, it was the best time to drive..during church hours because everyone was at home.

I wonder, is Brown making this statement have anything to do with a certain upcoming election Labor will most likely lose anyways?

France IS very secular in the sense that people absolutely refuse to mix religion and politics and any politician that would use their faith to try and get votes would probably self-destruct in a NY minute. I think that is probably true in all of Western Europe.

Nevertheless, Brown is definitely not wrong. The UK and for that matter the West as a whole is still very Christian culturally. There's no denying that. As long as people keep religion out of government, I see nothing wrong with this state of things. As an atheist, I have no problem living in a judeo-christian society.

Probably.

It is an unspoken rule, politicans do not mention faith or religion or their own.
Blair knew this, he had to hide he was religious. Heck, i thought he was Atheist until he ran into the arms of the CC the second he left.

Everyone knows UK is Christian, as is most of Europe. I don't need my politican telling me.

So that's the Christian society Alfons was talking about.

They drive in kilometres per hour.

It is. Even in the catholic countries like Portugal, Spain and Italy, church participation by people and the church meddling in society had considerably gone down since the 1980s and before that in some countries. Personally I cite the flower power student revolts of the 1960s and 1970s for this.. it freed Europe from the clutches of a religious dominated conservative political sphere.

Religion is a person thing and has no business in political life and especially in policy. I could care less if you worshipped god, a dog, some green men or mother earth. I do care if you bring your religion into politics and try to force it down on others and especially me and my family.

Until there is a large enough majority to pass Sharia law.

It's simply because of Western Europe's immigration laws.
Nothing to do about it, it's their country, if they want their people to be the minority it's fine with me.
I'm just afraid that the great cultures of Western Europe would be evicted by the increasing amount of immigrants and their growth rate.(And not only Muslims, just mostly Muslims)

Yes.
We Muslims are breeding like rabbits.
It is a secret conspiracy, created by the Aliens and enforced by the Muslims to overrun Europe with Muslims so we can outbreed them and then eventually turn the whole world into Muslim only ...

I just have one question ...
How did you find out?

Not even a chocolate bar?
Stingy ... :(

That's only the reward in Belgium.

In the U.K. you only get some tired vegitables boiled until unrecognizeable.

Yes, I do. There are already Muslims in the UK that want to be judged under Sharia law.

So?
There are also Jews who are judged under their own court. *Gasp shock horror* :doh

Besides, who says the majority of Muslims want sharia. I don't want sharia

What I want to know is where you guys are hiding all your hordes. I hardly ever see any of you around. Maybe I should watch more American TV.

I've been to a chocolate factory in Belgium a few years ago, and no, it isn't the best thing I've ever tasted.

Just sayin'...
