"President Barack Obama may accept nonprofit health-insurance cooperatives in place of a new government-run plan as long as consumers are guaranteed more choice and competition in buying insurance, a top aide said."

Obama Open to Creation of Health Cooperatives, DeParle Says - Yahoo! News

So the Obama administration is backing off of its original ideas. I think it is good that he is now thinking of a compromise.

Will Congress follow? Is this a sign that universal healthcare proponents may not get what they want? Will other provisions of current healthcare reform fall as well?

I don't believe we were ever getting universal health care.

I would have two objections to Obama's healthcare plans.
1) Is what Obama offering the US as good as the health care currently available to those in Congress?
2) I cannot see or understand why this Insurance should be made available to all who manage to enter the US and who cannot obtain a valid Green card.
