Stars in a distant galaxy move at stunning speeds — greater than 1 million mph, astronomers have revealed.


These hyperactive stars move at about twice the speed of our sun through the Milky Way, because their host galaxy is very massive, yet strangely compact. The scene, which has theorists baffled, is 11 billion light-years away. It is the first time motions of individual stars have been measured in a galaxy so distant.


While the stars' swiftness is notable, stars in other galaxies have been observed to travel at similarly high speeds. In those situations, it was usually because they were interlopers from outside, or circling close to a black hole.


But in this case, the stars' high velocities help astronomers confirm that the galaxy they belong to really is as massive as earlier data suggested.

Very interesting stuff.
 
So let me see if I have this right. These galaxies become larger, yet retain the same density and mass, though they cover a greater area.
 
:aliens1:I agree this is a very interesting revelation.
The mysteries of the Universe are so complex they defy most of our ability to comprehend when we get into the vastness of the distances and size involved. When we just look into Cosmology (the study of our oqn Universe) we can be blown away by those same factors.
For example in about two billion years our Milky Way Galaxy is calculated to collide with the Andromeda Galaxy but by then man will either have to be long gone from earth because the study of Our Sun tells Scientists that it will collapses into a white dwarf, perhaps destroying the Earth in the process because it ie predicted to expand turning Earth into the burned out cinder threatened in the 50s era movie "the Day the Earth Stood Still."
Hopefully man we have overcome the the urge to be in constant conflict between nations millions of years before then and will have moved off into the Universe in search of other worlds capable of sustaining mankind so that some vestige of man will survive and all that we do now and all the suffering and of the evolution of the past will not have been in vane. Other wise that is going to be the legacy of all who have come before and all who will come in the future. That my friends is the same nothingness we see between the stars as we gaze into the night sky today.
It is long past due that we settle on a common mission for the survival of mankind and pit our efforts into more productive pursuits to insure that in the future there is a future. It will require sacrifice and an end to the petty differences that promote only our personal agendas that do not contribute one iota to mankind.
This is my wish for man and it stars within each of us and the basic golden rule of all religions and need not be looked at as a religious precept to be meaningful and if implemented to have most wonderful effect ever. That is: "Do unto others as you would have other do unto you."

I believe to maintain density and mass in expansion requires the existence of "dark matter" that is as far as I know yet immeasurable which leaves this concept nothing more than a theory at this point in cosmic time. But then I'm a dummy.
 
I am one of those who have no idea about galaxies and stars velocity and all that jazz ...

But i will say nice picture, very pretty
