2 Obama officials: No guarantee taxes won't go up

*UPDATE*

White House steadfast on pledge of no middle-class tax increase - CNN.com

The White House shot down concerns Monday that middle-class families may face a tax increase in order to combat rising deficits and a struggling economy.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the stimulus plan is working, but tough choices may be ahead.

"The president was clear during the campaign about his commitment on not raising taxes on middle-class families," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday afternoon. "I don't think any economist would believe that, in the environment that we're in, that raising taxes on middle-class families would make any sense."

LOL!

How is it a "pirouette"? No one ever said taxes would be raised, they just refused to promise they wouldn't be raised. Only a fool would make a no-tax pledge.

I wonder what Geitner's view from under the bus is like?

Why would Geitner say that, when it totally against PBO's policy? Either Geitner is stupid, or PBO is lieing his ass off and if Geitner is that stupid, then he probably shouldn't the SECTRES.

me, I wouldn't ever appoint a SECTRES that stupid.

so you would prefer no taxes and no services, and no government, just you and your gun against the world. Well, unfortunately that is not an option, the citizens of the US decided against that position about 150 years ago.

Yeah. That's exactly what I said.

Ya got nothing, sport. Nothing.

:rofl

"I can make a firm pledge -- under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

Barack H. Obama, Dover, New Hampshire, 9/12/08.

But if you're calling Barack Obama a fool, you've got no argument from me.

:rofl

seems like Obama qualified that pledge pretty precisely, not your basic "read my lips" or Grover Norquist bull. So where's the pirouette?

I think Geithner was just a scapegoat. The Obama administration had him throw this out there to test the waters. That way, Obama is not seen as breaking any promises directly.

Yeah. His qualifications intensified the pledge. NO middle-class tax increase of any kind.

You know, if you don't want to get caught with your britches down and have to twist out ridiculous backpedals from what you say, maybe you should look to see if it's right first? Just a thought.

But I guess that would require you to do something other than just knee-jerk automatic defense of all things Obama, so I get why you're not interested in doing so.

Say, weren't you guys in charge for the past 8 years? How'd that work out?

Pardon me for interjecting, but 'you guys' currently in power are making 'us' look GREAT! Lol, it was far far better then than now... and you can keep the change, this comment is tax-free... well, that is until Obama, Pelosi et al. find a way to tax this too!

so you would prefer no taxes and no services, and no government, just you and your gun against the world. Well, unfortunately that is not an option, the citizens of the US decided against that position about 150 years ago.

Um, why are those extremes the only two options here? Either over-tax hard working Americans or provide no services at all?

How about a little moderation here.

One can cut wasteful spending and still help hard-working Americans get back on their feet if they stumble... which is far better than burdening Americans with increased taxes in order to fund wasteful programs such as ACORN for example.

I'm curious, when the wealthy are already paying 15% less than they did under Reagan, why would you object to asking them to pay 1% more? Are you all so wealthy that this would hurt you, or is it just part of your principle that government should shrink until you can drown it in the bathtub?

If I have to pay more taxes, and hence my company as well, I'll be letting more people go. Then, overall, the government will collect less taxes overall.

Would you rather have 10 percent of $10, or 9 percent of $20? Obama wants the former.

Higher taxes will result in higher unemployement, and ultimately less taxes collected.

It's not like there's not enough history to know better.

Obama Renews Vow of No Middle-Class Tax Increase
WASHINGTON — The White House tried Monday to douse speculation that it might raise taxes on the middle class in violation of President Obama’s campaign promise, just a day after two of his top economic advisers left the door open to such a move to rein in spiraling deficits.

Mr. Obama told his economic team in a meeting at the White House that he intended to stand by his promise not to increase taxes on families making less than $250,000, aides said. He then sent his spokesman out to repeat that message in front of the television cameras.

“The president made a commitment in the campaign. He’s clear about that commitment, and he’s going to keep it,” said Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary.

The renewal of the promise came a day after Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and Lawrence H. Summers, director of the National Economic Council, both refused to rule out tax increases on the middle class while discussing ways to pare the deficit. The two were speaking on separate Sunday morning talk shows, venues where administration officials are usually well prepared on the official line before appearing.

“It’s never a good idea to absolutely rule things out no matter what,” Mr. Summers said on “Face the Nation” on CBS. Mr. Geithner, on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,” said, “We can’t make these judgments yet about exactly what it’s going to take” to tame the deficit.

Conservative critics interpreted those comments as laying the groundwork for trying to wriggle out of Mr. Obama’s campaign pledge.

“Obama should fire Geithner and Summers,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, a group that opposes tax increases. They “went on national television and implied the president lied his way into office and that he is open to raising taxes.”

Hey Grover, how is your buddy Jack doing getting raped in prison. Wish you could join him soon.

This is a particularly stupid strawman argument, which unfortunately pops up with regularity. If someone argues that there should be NO taxes yet there should still be services, then this holds. But unless that's what they're arguing, it doesn't.

Is he actually claiming that if you got a 4% mortgage that roads wouldn't be built?

so you would prefer no taxes and no services, and no government, just you and your gun against the world. Well, unfortunately that is not an option, the citizens of the US decided against that position about 150 years ago.

So Will sees one strawmans, and doubles down......

For many in your camp, what is "necessary" includes only bullets and bibles, the rest they will get for themselves.

This is a lie, based on your strawman that you built on the other strawman. Please back up your claim with facts, Thank you.
