California public union OKs strike authorization | U.S. | Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's largest state employees' union voted on Saturday to approve a strike authorization measure to protest furloughs of state workers and pressure state officials to ratify its labor contract.

A spokesman for Service Employees International Union Local 1000 said a strike was not imminent but that the vote authorized union officers to initiate certain job actions, including a strike if necessary.
This could be a blessing in disguise for California. If SEIU strikes, the Governator could fire the whole sorry lot of them (and being fired that way would probably mean no need to pay the parasites unemployment), while creating 95,000 immediate job openings to pull people off the unemployment rolls. Not to mention busting one of the more parasitical unions outside the UAW.

You can fire them?

Its like a whole new world has been opened to me ... The amount of union workers i'd love to lay off in London is countless.

Great. Let them strike.

The Governor doesn't have the balls to fire them, although I think that would be a great idea. The State of California couldn't be in any worse condition. He, the governor, does have the authority to hire new workers and use the National Guard. He won't.........he has lots of old big muscles but no balls.

Now can we get back on topic or are you incapable of that Scorpion?

Scorpion, would you mind sticking to the topic in the OP? Your comments to Laila are venturing a tad far off the path.

So, now that those two are rooming together......

What happens in that once great state of California? I for one hope they go bankrupt. I for one hope the unions strike. I for one will be laughing my ass off.

This is a promising development. Finally, the unions are starting to wake up to the situation they face; they should have done this MUCH earlier.

Wake up to what? The fact that they are one of the biggest impediments to sound fiscal planning? Or that they ought just get it over and strike, thus bring the State of California to its knees.

I say strike. I want to see California fail. They deserve it. They brought it on themselves.

Give them the boot, and then allow them to compete with the other unemployed people from around California to see if they are actually the right person for their job.

I bet there are some whom are unemployed and hungry for a new job, much more than these, as CelticLord denoted, parasites.

How does a strike help the folks on the picket line? Strikes won't change the fact that California has no money.

The SEIU seems to think the good times can go on forever, and that unions can perpetually survive on the labor of others. They are wrong, and the sickening thud they are hearing is reality landing right on top of them.

They helped sow this fiscal mess in California, and now they are reaping their share of the fiscal whirlwind.

if the union went on strike, no doubt the state could overnite hire about 100,000 qualified teachers to backfill those empty positions. it's not like they expect the kids to learn anything, anyway [/s]

it appears the state bargained on the new contract in bad faith. don't negotiate what you won't sign. as the article mentioned, it has been over a year since the contract agreement was concluded. there is an obligation of the parties, the union and the state, to negotiate in good faith. refusing to sign what was negotiated is hardly good faith bargining

i see a number of folks bashing labor, but where is the criticism of a management group which would allow this kind of situation to develop

I agree. Fire their dumb asses too!

So they strike?

Big deal.

The longer they strike, the less they get paid.

The longer they strike, the more voters realize they're not needed.

Sounds all to the good to me.

Excuse me....but aren't you posting on a thread about an issue concerning only one of the fifty seven states making up the United States?
