Venezuela elects a Socialist President who has every intention of remaining in power until the day he dies.

USA elect a Socialist President who has every intention..........................................................................................?
 
The limiting of free expression and freedom of speech is inevitable in any dictatorship and often comes just a a coup is taking place. It used to be that before TV all radio stations were taken over and and propaganda filled the air waves as the junta installed itself into power. These days in countries where a seemingly free elected person is in power steps are taken to begin to slowly remove things such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and other rights we in this country far too often take for granted.
This is generally proceeded by huge amounts of propaganda giving the population hope with very unrealistic goals and promises that are never really delivered. A portion of that population become glassy eyed followers of that leader and go so far as to defend them even in the face of clear evidence that their new found Messiah is a complete fraud and doing nothing but cementing his own position as dictator. Seldom as it's taking place does the majority ever believe this could happen until it's too late to stop it without a major fight and some lose of life. It is hard to conceive that it could happen because after all this is their home it could not be going on here they say to themselves. One morning they wake up to find everything they knew has changed and the Government that was once there only to protect you now controls your every activity things like the economy, Health Care, what you can and can't eat, and they manipulate media into believing it's the right thing to do so they not only go along with it but openly support the formation of the dictatorship.
Sound like any place other than Venezuela? You had better believe it before it's too late.
Chavez and one of his new pals is following a well worn pattern that well lead to ultimately destruction.

For a few weeks after the election, I was concerned that the laws might be changed to allow Obama to run for more than two terms, and I do believe the the idea was put forward by one Congressman.

Fortunately though, the Congress' and President's public support is already so low or declining so quickly that I htink that danger is past.

Really, the law should be changed. In the interests of non-partisanship, however, it should be changed such that the new lack of term limits applies beginning with the President after the one in office when the term limits are removed.

Would not mind seeing the law changed for the election of naturalized citizens, either, provided that they have been citizens for a certain number of years. Regardless of whether we approve of his policies or not, I think we can agree that Governor Schwarzenegger has more than proven his bona fides as a real American.

I'm more concerned with what they do in the next two years than the prospect of President Obama being elected for a third or subsequent term. Regardless of term limits, what they do in office now will affect our country for decades to come.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday. We both agreed that naturalized immigrants are very often exemplary citizens and should be aloowed to run for President.

I recommend a 45 year citizenship requirement, which would make people born abroad but brought to the U.S. as infants eligible at nearly the same age as native born children.

I could not disagree more. It's bad enough that there are people born here put some other country of continent in front of America when they talk about themselves. What am I talking about you say? People that call themselves Mexican Americans, African Americans. Italian Americans and so on. Now if you were born in another Country fine then you can put that country first if you like, but if you were born in the United States you are an American of what ever descent they wish to claim.
As far as Arnold Schwarzenegger is concerned he is as bad an example as you could come up with in this case. He is no more qualified that the current Amateur in Chief. I don't question his loyalty just his effectiveness.
The only Constitutional Amendment we could use is one that requires that you prove with a real Certified document the you were born here, not some useless BS certificate of live birth that means nothing.

By the way there is still talk of allowing more than two terms, which is as good an amendment as most of the first 10. Hopefully Obama will only have one. With his poll numbers headed for the toilet where Nasty Piglousy's dwell there is still reason for hope the country will survive,

Your pathological conspiracy theories and comparisons of Obama and Chavez are laughable. Do you spend your life on a slippery slope, magnifying everything that happens into doomsday?
 
The Venezuelan media are immoral abd their actions have caused panic among the people they are supposed to be delivering a service to. Their actioons have even lead to mutrder on occassion. Once your freedom starts to be hurtful to that of others then it rightfully must be curbed.

Every country has laws like this (referring to the first two paragraphs). As for the third paragraph, every country should have a law like that. Also, this isn't a law yet; it was proposed by a prosecutor and not Chavez.

Chavez controls the courts, and his definition of "disturbing public peace" is likely to have a radically lower threshold than any such law in the US. You can't deny that Chavez has taken hold of more and more power over the years, and though he may not be the next Castro, he certainly has it in him to cause plenty of trouble anyway.

I don't think that is a very fair comparison. Obama has not tried to impede the free speech of Americans nor has he made any indication that he will try and eliminate Presidential term limits should he win a second term. Extreme leftists were also making these claims about Bush, saying he would use the War on Terror to remain in office after the end of his second term.

Radical legislation like that gets introduced every year, but nobody takes those bills seriously and they never make it to the floor for a vote. Such was the case with this bill.

And yet, most of these are natural born US citizens. I've never heard Governor Schwarzenegger refer to himself as "Austrian-American".

I agree with you about the hyphenated Americans, I think Theodore Roosevelt said it best. There is not room in America for people who are not Americans first, foremost, and only. On the other hand, it would appear that frequently the best Americans are men and women whose American citizenship had to be earned. They have demonstrated their patriotism more effectively than any nativist who incessantly bleats over where someone may or may not have been born.

And in that case, considering the disastrous start that this President is off to and the abject failure of the previous President-- both born as American citizens-- you should have no objection to changing the law to allow Governor Schwarzenegger to become President. If, as you imply, his heart is in the right place he could not possibly be any worse.

Regardless of the fact that the State of Hawai'i has verified the validity of his birth certificate and his birthplace in Honolulu, President Obama is a native-born American citizen by virtue of the fact that his mother is, and has always been, an American citizen. You might recall that this is the same reason that Senator McCain, being born in Panama, is also an American citizen.

You do realize that your usage of childish nicknames for politicians you dislike makes all of your arguments less credible, don't you? Speaker Pelosi's record of abominable statements and self-serving political maneuvers do far more to damage her credibility than your childish insults ever will.
