Really, how hard is this?
It's false growth because consumers would not have otherwise participated.
This program isn't going on forever and when it ends, what will the dealerships and automakers do with all those unneeded employees and cars?

It will turn to be a micro downturn in that market segment.

Government has a terrible track record of making things more efficient, don't trust this will work either.

It makes no sense for me, a person lving within the constraints of a budget, to turn in a car that is currently running fine and gets 16-20mpg, to end up with a brand new car that will likely cost me $250+ a month, plus gasoline even if that car gets 30+ mpg. Not to mention the higher insurance premium I'll have to pay to keep a low deductible on a brand new car because the loan provider will dictate I keep a low deductible, and because I live in NC I would have to pay a high property tax on a brand new vehicle each year for plate renewal, and an emissions test each year for any car '98 and newer. I'm not going to make up the difference by a long shot.

I need to stimulate, and take care of my own bank account first, rather than worry about the miniscule environmental imprint my car might be having on the environment, or some union workers job in Detroit.
Exactly, there is no sense to take perfectly functional cars off the road and replace them with new ones, just because.

This program is going to be a failure, and will cause problems down the road. In the short term, it might do some good. But in the long term, it will end up costing more than it is worth, and when the program ends any new workers hired will no longer be needed and they will be laid off.

It moves the playing pieces around on the game board.

A program like this is undoubtedly stimulative to the auto industry--it helps them sell new cars.

However, new cars require less maintenance--a program like this does not help the automotive service industry.

    Auto manufacturing supports 876,900 jobs.
    Automotive service supports 858,300 jobs.

If 225,000 new cars are sold, how is the economy not helped?

It's taking money and moving it through several different levels as well as causing more vehicles to be made which otherwise wouldn't have been.

In all it's a waste of energy, materials, time and money.
    It's not efficient.

They're breaking windows to fix them.

I will keep my Chevy Suburban as well. No need to trade in a perfectly running vehicle on the premise that I am killing the planet. That is just insane.
What spin? I don't care if I support Muslims. I'm not threatened by buying items from China or buying oil from the Middle East. It's a global economy and I don't believe that every Muslim is some radical extremist trying to kill me. The way some Conservatives feel about Muslims though...

Man, if all you Conservatives can look into your crystal balls and see into the future, why didn't we realize that Bush's policies would head us into a recession? Hmm...
