Is Governor Schwarzenegger the only sane politician in CA.
Come to think of it, he is probably the sanest politician in the entire USA.

What makes American politicians believe that the rest of the world owes them a living?

$52m slated for preventing the spread of HIV and the treatment for those with the virus.
That may come back to haunt them.

And I disagree with your view on his sanity. For years Californian politicians knew that their coffers were being filled by a source that will eventually go dry. Once dividends and capital gains dried up, they'd be screwed. Did Schwarzenegger do anything about this? Nope.

California gets what it deserves. Sane politicians see the end of the gravy train and mitigate. Insane politicians don't.

    California's $85bn budget (51bn) has a deficit of $26bn (15bn).

I would hardly call this budget a success. We need 52 more cuts just like this to get back on track.

I have no idea who is and is not a Californian out there or how much you do or do not know of the coming disaster Arnold is going to get to preside over. He and the rest of State Government are allowing the environmental wackos to wreak havoc over segments of the California economy that will reach out into pretty much every household in the Nation simply because they lack the brains to come up with feasible alternatives. The culprit at the heart of this issue is a finger sized fish known as the Delta Smelt. It is claimed that the entire ecosystem of the Sacramento River Delta is dependent on the survival of this tiny fish that is threatened by the diversion of water from the Delta to farming and other uses. In an over reaction to the unproven claims of disaster the State has chosen to sacrifice huge ares of farming rather than look for a better alternative yo cutting of the water.
The farming areas in question are the most produce in the world and generate not only vast amounts of food to the Nation but to the state it represents thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, taxes from the sale of peripheral products used in production, income taxes, sales taxes because the unemployed don't make purchases. Then there is going to be the effect on food costs which could skyrocket do to shortages, which could also lead to the import of more product from third world nations that do not have rules and regulations in production that held to maintain food safety.
What we are talking about is potentially the thousands of jobs and billions of dollars pushing the state farther into the abyss of deficits, and all because they will not use their heads.
In a few minutes I was able to learn that this fish is very fast at reproduction only taking a number of days to produce thousands per parent fish, and that this reproduction takes place in less than pristine waters. Therefore it is a prime candidate for growth in a hatchery system that's cost to create would be minuscule when compared to the cost of killing vast amounts of farm production.
Here is a reasonable solution to a questionable problem but it is not even being explored because they didn't come up with it. I personally know for a fact that Arnold or at least his staff is aware of this possibility because I sent it to him months ago. I know how Government works and they tend to resist outside ideas in favor of their own. If they were inundated with requests to look into this possibility they might actually learn something.
It is for this reason alone I take issue with the claim by at least one poster who believes Arnold is a good politician. Having a closed mind leaves you open to stupid mistakes.
Many of our people including thousands of children will be further hurt by lack of imagination and too many people who won't listen to reason.
I would urge everyone to pass this idea on until they at least look into it if I were a news paper reporter.

California's economy is in the toilet, while billions in oil and gas royalties are sitting just a few miles offshore doing nothing.

    Re: Schwarzenegger passes budget cuts

I used to live and vote in CA for a few years and let me tell you what the biggest problem there is: democracy, or more specifically too much of it. CA gives its voters WAY too much power in the ballot box. Anybody with enough signatures, or the state gov't itself, can put nearly anything on a ballot and have people vote for it. The result is a literal cluster **** and hodgepodge of a budget that makes no sense whatsoever. The average citizen of CA, or nation/state/region, in the world is not smart enough to build a budget for the state via 15 special ballots every year. And even if they were the very fact that people are voting on it and that its spread out means you might end up voting "Yes" for something in a June ballot only to regret it in July because another measure passed that you had no idea existed when you voted yes in June.
