RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina father who led an unobtrusive rural life as a drywall contractor had militant roots dating back to 1980s Afghanistan and Pakistan and secretly led a U.S. group plotting international terrorism, federal prosecutors said.

Daniel Patrick Boyd, 39, was arrested Monday with his two sons and four other North Carolina men. Prosecutors accused them of military-style training at home and plotting "violent jihad" through a series of terror attacks abroad.

Authorities believe Boyd's roots in terrorism run deep. They said when he was in Pakistan and Afghanistan from 1989 through 1992, he had military-style training in terrorist camps and fought the Soviets, who were ending their occupation of Afghanistan.

ARTICLE

At the risk of being dinged for editorial content, I recommend you all read the linked article and consider the story of Mr. Boyd.

I'd be interested in your comments on the ramifications for public safety if "the guy next door" could be this far gone in such a movement. Mr. Boyd is the fellow on the lower right of the photo.

North Carolina Father, Sons Among 7 Charged With Plotting 'Violent Jihad'

Holy ****

But court records indicate Boyd was a veteran of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan who fought against the Soviet Union.

"These charges hammer home the point that terrorists and their supporters are not confined to the remote regions of some far-away land but can grow and fester right here at home," U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding said.

OH NOES!!!! They can be from here too! Quick, government put cameras up everywhere, including in our homes! Tap everything....everything! The terrorists are coming, the terrorists are coming!!!!

What I find funny is that the guy was "a veteran of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan who fought against the Soviet Union". Interesting eh? Fighting the Soviet Union. Wonder who trained those guys....

I loved this line:
The wives of the men told The Associated Press in an interview at the time they were glad the truth about their husbands had finally become known

What's even more interesting are those that say we need to only profile "arab" looking people at the airport.

They were living their "Rural Life" in the area I grew up. They look vaguely familiar, but they also blend in the general countenance of the population.

Honestly, out in the Cedar Grove - Rougemont (about where they're from) area if there is no complaints filed against you, you can live in peace doing whatever you do.

That's the price people out here are willing to take for "freedoms"; the possibility that Jimmy next door is an international terrorist.

Well ****, that sounds pretty reasonable. I'll take it. You sound like you don't like that, what would you do? Have random police inspections? Random wire tapping?

Look at this 18 year old story, in which a Utah Congressman intervened to prevent this guy from getting his hands and feet cut off in Pakistan.

Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, is seeking to prevent Pakistan from amputating the right hands and left feet of two Americans - who are sons of a friend's secretary - as punishment after conviction there for robbery.

Daniel Patrick Boyd, 22, and Charles Thomas Boyd, 30, are sons of a secretary of Owens' friend, Hal Furman, whose Washington law firm lobbies Congress for the Central Utah Project. The Boyds were convicted in a June 1991 bank robbery where $3,500 was taken. They were sentenced to each have a right hand and left foot amputated, serve long prison sentences and pay fines.

So Owens, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, arranged a meeting Tuesday with members of the committee to express concern to Pakistani ambassador Najmudding A. Shaikh.

"The ambassador cannot absolutely assure us that the amputations would not occur but told us as strongly as possible that the chances are remote," Owens said after the meeting.

Shaikh told the press the Boyds' case is on appeal to the Pakistani Supreme Court, which has never allowed an amputation case to proceed after his country passed a 1979 law to permit them. Shaik said he expects a ruling on their appeal by the end of the month.

There's not enough resources for those things.

We're talking very limited wireless cellphone signal, absolutely no cable companies (people who use the internet and can afford it have satellite or dial-up), the town centers are centered next to the only diner in a 30 mile radius, people drive 30 miles minimum to go to an established super-market, or a Wal-Mart.

The cops respond to emergencies only. I've driven 100 mph plus down the road that connects these "neck of the woods" to civilization and not worry about cops.

If I do find a cop in this area, then I know their son or daughter and I went to school or played sports with their son or daughter, and they let me go.

People hark for personal freedoms and the government getting off of "our back", but where there is absolute freedom, a simple incision in the fabric of morality can rip the whole tribe open.

So, when looking for Muslim terrorists who do we need to profile?

So you would like those things but don't think it's possible currently to implement? Not sure what you're trying to say. I want personal freedoms, and the government to get off my back. I will take what ever duty, responsibility, and consequence that comes with freedom. If it means there may be a terrorist down the street from me (no matter how unlikely that will ever be), the so be it. I'll take it so that I can be free. No amount of safety is worth any amount of freedom.

Nobody needs "profiling" since anyone can be a terrorist. Muslim, Jew, atheist, Christian, Drywaller....

How many times have we been attacked by Jew, atheist, Christian, Drywaller terrorists?

More often than we've been attacked by muslims.

To name a few "biggies" Oklahoma city, Atlanta summer games, Alphabet bomber, Unabomber....

So, what terrorist orgs did those terrorists belong to, what are their agendas and where do they operate? Thanks in advance for the info on that.

Oh my.

Please US do not react the same we in Europe do when homegrown terrorism occurs.
Tighten and strip away civil liberties one by one under the guise of 'protecting us' from those nasty terrorists amongst our midst (you know, which is why they want my DNA, Put cameras in every damn corner and have the ability to search without a warrant and arrest without cause)

We already did that for global terrorism.

Oh god, we really are buggered if Americans have done the same thing we have done.

They "say" it is for Muslim terrorists but there have been cases of them spying on average citizens ... imagine that, a Government abusing its power. Unheard of i tell you

Ya'll never had many civil liberties to strip away, so I'm sure you didn't really notice.

Moving the goalposts? When did you ask for "groups" before?

Does one need to be in a group to blow up an airplane?

You mistake us for France where there is no such thing as freedom of press

Don't be too sure, before the filth called Labour creeped in and started stealing it slowly after 9/11.

Just imagine we once did have the ability to protest when we wanted and the right to say what we wanted without having the Government monitor your everyword. Its like mourning the death of a family member, you never realise just how special it is until it is taken or curbed.

Would I personally want these places I grew up in to be hawked by the Government? Yeah sure, but they sure as hell better have a warrant.

Even Google Maps/Globe miss these areas. There is no interest by federal governments (nor State, or local gov'ts) to keep on eye on these places. They are farms, woods, and crack-houses.

I think for the most part there is no need to keep an eye on middle-lower class farmers and descendants thereof. It's hard enough for most of the people to get their children through college, they're not about to go blow up Bank of America.

Well, to qualify as a terrorist one has to have an agenda, or be a part of a movement that is furthered by a terror campaign. Otherwise, we're just talking about a few lone wolf nut jobs.
