BBC NEWS | South Asia | India launches nuclear submarine

"India has launched its first nuclear-powered submarine, becoming only the sixth country in the world to do so.

The 6,000 tonne Arihant was launched by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a ceremony on the south-east coast.

It was built entirely in India with Russian assistance and a second one is due to be constructed shortly.

It will undergo trials over the next few years before being deployed and will be able to launch missiles at targets 700km (437 miles) away.

Until now, only the US, Russia, France, Britain and China had the capability to build nuclear submarines"

Very Interesting with the 6000 ton number what Russian Sub was the base's for the design. I know that India was trying to lease two Akula-class submarine from Russia but because of maintance delays this never never happen.

Also they could have used the last of the Scorpene Class Subs for this Boat it has been reported by many different source that one of the Hull being build at Mazagon Ship Yard was going to be used for a Nuke Sub but the Scorpene class are only 2000 ton Boats.

Either way this should make it rather interesting now with both China and Pakistan. I wonder if Pakistan will now ask the United States for Aegies Destroyers.

Very interesting indeed. I think India is vital in balancing the power in Asia. With China and Russia working together to counter U.S. influence, I thnk it is good to have a powerful democracy in their midsts. Will China like it? Chances are they knew about it before Russia ever agreed to work with India on it. Pakistan, will I agree, ask the U.S. for submarines as well, but I do not see the U.S. giving them any.

Yes I agree we need to work more closely with India for sometime there has been discussion with India to hold Joint Naval Operations in the Indian Sea.

Personally I would like to see both India and Pakistan work on a Joint Naval Task Force sort of like what Aussie and New Zealand have, It would be in the best interest for both nations and the World in General.

As for Pakistan asking for Subs from the United States your right not going to happen I can see them asking to purchase one or two Aegies Class Destroyers or if they can't get something from us go to the French for purchase of the La Fayette Class Frigate's.

Why is Russia helping India?

And what does Russia get out of it?

Why do i get the feeling Pakistan will soon be the seventh country in the world to have that ability?

I have no problem with India having a nuclear-powered submarine. Pakistan, now... they make me a bit nervous. Too many extreme-Islamofascists running loose in Pakistan.

As long as they continue to hate India, their capacity for mischief is rather self-contained.

Yeah. Just what the heck is so valuable about the Cashmere region anyway?

No Pakistan is many years away from having any form of Nuke Subs. As it stands now they have five French Build Diesel Subs.

I have never understood that either - I believe it is merely a power play, neither side able to be seen as weak on such a issue but i have gathered it is territorial dispute only. No actual religious claim. Both claim historical right to the land because a section of 'their group' live there. When the British split the land up when Britain had both as part of the empire, we did not resolve this issue and as a result. They hate each other because neither side is willing to compromise. Pakistan accuses India of hypocracy, India refuses to recognise two regions that Pakistan says it is theirs on the grounds that is is populated with a hindu majority, Pakistan claims the same grounds on Kashmir.

But another reason could be the geographical positioning as it is bordering China

Correct me if i'm wrong but i gathered that is the gist of it, i'm sure it is more complicated.

What are they going to do with one sub? They couldn't stray too far from their home port, because they can't support a submarine at long ranges.

I'm still trying to figure out why India thinks they need a sub.

This the first of 5 Nuke Subs that tye will have the second one is about 6 months from entering service. You do understand the India has a very good size Deep Water Fleet.

For what, though? So they can go right around the corner and attack Pakistan?

Curry is a good food, Indian people don't smell, and they have a rich culture and cuisine that goes far beyond simply curry. So much for tolerance or multi-culturalism here
