India launches nuclear submarine

For what, though? So they can go right around the corner and attack Pakistan?

No to make China worry I guess you missed that part if the ongoing discussion

With regards to political correctness this is a very strong and positive move by India, and as bluntly as I can put it: its about freakin' time!

Honestly, I'm pretty cheerful this whole thing, in fact India is a very strong ally that is unfortunately overlooked by the U.S. India is kind of like an American wannabe anyway and the country serves its purpose as by launching a nuclear submarine.

I'm still trying to figure out why India thinks they need a sub.

Same reason every other nation that has nuclear boats has them: deterence.

One of the requirements for a successful first-strike attack is having the assurance that all targets aimed at will be destroyed on the first shot, thereby eliminating the enemy's ability to retaliate.

Having part of one's nuclear arsenal hiding out under the dark cold waters of the sea introduces a serious element of uncertainty into the potential attacker's plans, and that's how the US won the Cold War without nuking anyone.

India's going to make China sweat, because they have a submarine? I think it's going to take alot more than that.

They have a boomer, or an attack boat? If they only have an attack boat, they won't be deterring much.

Re: India launches nuclear submarine.......•

In part, India's new capability will indeed make China worry. However, as these countries have deep economic ties and are both members of ASEAN, the likelyhood of an actual conflict is very low. What this does though, it present a new ally in the region to the U.S., as well as a possible policing presence for the likes of North Korea and other rogue nations. As I have mentioned earlier, China undoubtedly was well aware of India's nuclear sub. As there is slight power tension between the two nations, Russia surely informed China early on about the cooperation.

Like ONE submarine is going to start an arms race in the pacific

Its seriously nothing to worry or care about on anybodies part, unless your Pakistan.

Curry is a good food, Indian people don't smell, and they have a rich culture and cuisine that goes far beyond simply curry. So much for tolerance or multi-culturalism here

Who said they smelt?

Well, perhaps the nuclear warheads on the missiles that the sub is carrying will help them work up a sweat. If that doesn't work, there's always the curry.

Stop being so sensitive. I have a few very close Indian buddies and they joke all the time.;) Great food to, but it does cause some gas!

I could go for some Vhendaloo (however you spell it) beef right now, and some of that flatbread they make...mmmm.

I'm not totally convinced that it's a missile boat, at 6,000 tons displacement. But, then again, it may just be. The Chinese have a missile boat that small. However, the media being the media it wouldn't suprise me if they confused nuclear powered with nuclear capable.

Well you have a point there, I just made that mistake myself. The mission of the sub may be to detect and eliminate small boats full of terrorists, like the ones that attacked India earlier this year.

Well I guess some of you folks didn't read what I put up this is the first of 6 Nuke Subs that India is going to commish. The next one is slated to be Commish. in 6 months with the next 2 in about 11 months.

As for the Indian Navy they are the 5th Largest Navy in the World with 155. They have right now 2 Carriers with another under construction and another slated to be build by 2013.
