Being an asshole is the one thing that is most likely to land someone in the back of a squad car.

Remembering the manners your mama is supposed to have taught you is how you stay out of the back of a squad car.

This I know from personal experience--have had to explain to the cops on a couple of occasions why some asshat got a literal smackdown from me....and because I remember my manners I've never gotten more than a class C misdemeanor assault citation out of it.

I wouldn't say this has left Gates' looking like a dork, actually. Rightly or wrongly, a lot of people seem to back him up in his actions.
By pulling 5 squad cars away from other activities, there is the possibility that actual crimes were committed which might have been preventable.
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

The whole victim thing, I have been rolling around in my mind. Police can cite you for disturbing the peace for loud music without witness statements being given, so maybe it is similar reasoning.

Ehhhh, but that is a sticky relationship. He did not break the law, and hence the cops should not have attempted punish mode. This could end up costing their department quite a bit of money, and in the end is absolutely pointless.

As I said in another thread, The Good Reverend is often stopped by the police, Just because they find him interesting....

This I think is the only proper argument to be made. There is no racial component here because cops do this to pretty much anyone who annoy them. The initial questioning and request of ID was fine, as there was report of a break in. But the arrest or disorderly conduct on his own property is over the line. Something should be done about that, but this is not a racial profiling case; just standard abuse of power.

The only thing that needed to be done about it was for the property owner to shut up and thank the officers for doing their job in a timely fashion.

He was the one in the wrong, he's the one that owes the apology.

If he'd ever learned any manners that was the time to use them. Instead, yes, he broke the law, and he got arrested. Don't go down the nonsense path of saying that the boy didn't break the law. I don't even see an abuse of power issue here, and those are usually pretty easy to spot.
