If I've got a neighbor standing out in public yelling that cops are racist I'm likely to shout back at him to shut the hell up, and when he doesn't I'm equally likely to walk up to him and shut him up myself. So I'm quite OK with a cop hauling the pissant prof off to the lockup for a few hours to cool his jets....saves me the time and trouble and court appearances for giving his mealy mouth the slapping it deserves.
the ultimate deescalation in this case would of been for the cop to walk away.

But why should he have to risk paying money to lawyers, and going to court, when there was not a crime committed? Because he's an asshole? That's out of their jurisdiction
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

Once Crowley realized he was dealing with a Harvard Professor (i.e., a bloviating blowhard bigot), he called for Harvard cops to be on scene as well.

Smart move on his part, actually; now Gates looks like a dork on campus as well as off.

He was. Gates decided that wasn't enough and decided to follow Sergeant Crowley outside. That was dumb.

Gates decided to yell at Sergeant Crowley outside. That was stupid.

Gates decided to yell that the cops were racist outside. That was full retard--and disturbing the peace to boot.

Game, set, match to Sergeant Crowley.

No it won't. The Civil Rights Industry isn't going to let this one go. They're going make millions off this one. Especially, since they now have a racist prez that will support every move they make.

Five cruisers, for one man, is extreme. Witnesses, sure, but five cars full?

I wouldn't say this has left Gates' looking like a dork, actually. Rightly or wrongly, a lot of people seem to back him up in his actions.

Gates is only guilty of being a douchbag.

Disturbing the peace needs someone peace actually being disturbed, and without anyone stepping forward to do so, it didn't happen.

Otherwise the cops just abused their authority to get even for being shouted at.
