Top scholar Gates arrested in Mass., claims racism | Comcast.net

BOSTON — Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation's pre-eminent black scholar, is accusing Cambridge police of racism after he was arrested while trying to force open the locked front door of his home near Harvard University.

Cambridge police were called to the home Thursday afternoon after a woman reported seeing a man "wedging his shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open," according to a police report.

An officer ordered the man to identify himself, and Gates refused, according to the report. Gates began calling the officer a racist and said repeatedly, "This is what happens to black men in America."

Officers said they tried to calm down the 58-year-old academic, who responded, "You don't know who you're messing with," according to the police report.

Yea way to go there Prof. when a Cop ask you ti ID yourself the best thing for you to do is sure officer here is my ID and as you can see I live here. I locked myself out and was trying to force the door open.

You most likely won't get arrsted and I'm pretty sure the Cops will even try to help you.

But no the Good Prof. had to start yelling out that the Cops were being racist and they had no idea who they were messing with.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. I mean, most likely if someone saw someone trying to break in a door be it black or white (the person, not the door) they'd call the cops and they cops would show up and try to figure out what's happening. If he had identified himself and explained it's his home, there's good chance that the police would be more cooperative and try to help him out. All it takes is a little calm, rational thought.

It sounds like this guy threw a tizzy fit when a police officer had the temerity to do his job:

Henry Louis Gates Jr., acclaimed Harvard University academic and black history documentarian, has been arrested following a bizarre front-porch tirade about racism police said “alarmed” passers-by drawn to the uproar outside his Cambridge home.

“This is what happens to black men in America!” the allegedly “loud and tumultuous” 58-year-old divorcee is accused of having bellowed to a crowd of about seven early Thursday afternoon as Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley sought to question him about a reported break-in attempt at his Ware Street address.

A witness, 40-year-old Lucia Whalen of Malden, had alerted the cops that a man was “wedging his shoulder into the front door” at Gates’ house “as to pry the door open,” police reported.

A source said Gates apparently locked himself out. When Crowley arrived, he said Gates was already inside. But when he asked for identification, Gates allegedly snapped, “No, I will not!”

Crowley claims in a report he tried to calm Gates, but Gates “shouted, ‘You don’t know who your (sic) messing with!’ ”

After allegedly calling Crowley “a racist,” according to police reports, the professor was charged with disorderly conduct and released for a $40 fee. Gates is scheduled to be arraigned on a single charge of disorderly conduct Aug. 26 at Cambridge District Court in Medford.

I guess chillin' out and showing the cop his ID, to prove that that was actually his house would have made too much sense.

Whatta dumbass.

I'll not be so quick to condemn professor Gates as the rest of you based on a police report. Especially considering the allegations presented by his colleagues that there is a systematic problem present, or at least past questionable behavior by the local PD. I have been witness to events with which the corresponding police reports did not, well, correspond.
We are all well aware of numerous instances when police reports are fabricated or inaccurate, and we are all well aware of instances of institutionalized racism within police departments. I'm not calling the cops liars. I'm not calling them idiots. But I'm certainly not calling professor Gates those things either. I wasn’t there.

Why? Because he's black?
No, because of the reasons I just described. Though it shouldn't be necessary to clarify this, I shall make it clear that I wouldn't assume that a police report against a white professor was accurate either, especially if his colleagues asserted that his arrest was unjust and typical of other similar instances of misconduct.

So, the next time this cop sees a black dude, literally busting down the door of Dr. Gates's house, or anyone else's home in the neighborhood, he should ignore it and go on, because, last time, he got in trouble and was made to look like a racist asshole, on a national scale?

What if it had been a real robber, and, the cop did nothing? Then what? Gates would have been crying about how the cops didn't look for his crib, because he's black. That's what.

How hard would it have been just to cooperate, produce some ID, and it's all good?

How can it be that someone with multiple college degrees is too stupid not to have his key on his person, nor have a spare key hid out somewhere?

Oh so lets look at what his other Prof. said shall we,

From the Article,

Many of Gates' African-American colleagues believe his arrest is part of a pattern of racial profiling in Cambridge, said Allen Counter, who has taught neuroscience at Harvard for 25 years.

Counter has said he was stopped on campus by two Harvard police officers in 2004 after being mistaken for a robbery suspect. They threatened to arrest him when he could not produce identification.

Wow look another idiot who the cops ask for an ID, jeeze if a Cops ask you for your Id don't be an arse just pull it put and give it to him/her and camley ask what the problem is.

I don't buy the BS either of the Good Prof(s) are stating about Cambridge Cops have lived and work in the are I can tell you they are more worried about some Student screwing up then what a prof. skin color is.

A member of the faculty, is on campus, with no identification?

I never went to college, but I've heard about college, from people who went to college and not having an ID, on campus is somewhat of a no-no.

These are the mother ****ers that educating our youth? Kinda makes me glad I never went to college.

I can't fault the cop here...But I can't fault Gates either, ultimately it was a bad situation. I think it's fair to be pissed off if you're being suspected of breaking into your own house, but ultimately the good professor could have simply made one snide remark and everyone would have went about their day. Yelling at a police officer for minutes on end when the officer is trying to leave is just dumb.

Magic the gathering was the coolest.

Did Professor Gates think it was unreasonable for the police to be investigating 2 guys strongarming their way into his house?

I am willing to bet if 2 guys had been burgeralizing his house and were not immediately investigated He would have accused the police of not protecting his house for racial reasons.

In this case the police were damned if you do and damned if you dont.

I really want to know if he refused to identify himself or not.

Your id badge is like a security badge on many campuses. Cant get into certain places without it.

Doing it, then turning around and saying you aren't doing it doesn't mean you aren't doing it.

Noted.

How can it be that someone with multiple college degrees is too stupid not to have his key on his person, nor have a spare key hid out somewhere?

Not to mention he is too ****ing ignorant to just identify himself and state that he does in fact live there, and cooperate with the police, instead of being a race baiting asshole?

In fairness, he did provide the officer with his Harvard ID.

Here is the police report.

That's what I've heard. Can't check out a book at the library without it, can't eat at the cafeteria with out it, stuff like that.

Its not fair to be pissed off for being suspected of breaking into your own house?

The police got a call stating that someone was breaking into the home.

The police are not responsible for who calls what in to them. They are responsible for responding and investigating.

If the police respond and the act is still occurring it is their job to investigate.
If the individual refuses to identify himself, thats his own damned fault.

I have already stated very clearly that I do not fault the cop. I've shown that the man provided identification. Essentially, I don't disagree with you at all, nor have I said anything that would indicate disagreement.

Here's a question for ya.....

"Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation's pre-eminent black scholar..."

What the "F" does that mean? Pre-eminent black scholar?

Is there a pre-eminent white scholar.

Is there a pre-eminent muslim pos scholar?

Is there a pre-eminent Asian scholar?

What about a pre-eminent Polish-Chinese scholar?

Bottom line, from his action I would say he is far from a pre-eminent anything.

I think you already know that they just couldn't leave that part out.

They woulda put the rest of that crap, too, but it didn't apply. Everything, 'cept, "Polish", because Pols are just another version of white boy.

Oh Lord..... :shock Why don't conservatives understand?

This guy acted like a mook. But it's not a reason to grandstand about so called racism against white people.... It was one dude.

I got the joy of seeing a fudged police report on myself. Got a DUI and totally cooperated. When I was in court the report said I was belligerent, resisting arrest and yelling at the cops. Never happened.
