BOSTON Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation's pre-eminent black scholar, is accusing Cambridge police of racism after he was arrested while trying to force open the locked front door of his home near Harvard University.

Cambridge police were called to the home Thursday afternoon after a woman reported seeing a man "wedging his shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open," according to a police report.

An officer ordered the man to identify himself, and Gates refused, according to the report. Gates began calling the officer a racist and said repeatedly, "This is what happens to black men in America."

Officers said they tried to calm down the 58-year-old academic, who responded, "You don't know who you're messing with," according to the police report.

Yea way to go there Prof. when a Cop ask you ti ID yourself the best thing for you to do is sure officer here is my ID and as you can see I live here. I locked myself out and was trying to force the door open.

You most likely won't get arrsted and I'm pretty sure the Cops will even try to help you.

But no the Good Prof. had to start yelling out that the Cops were being racist and they had no idea who they were messing with.

Prominent black scholars are better than us white folk, who don't hesitate to haul out the drivers' licence when asked in a situation that closely resembles and breaking-and-entering incidents you may have heard about.

If the stuck up dumb ass wasn't so intent on being the next Rodney King, he could have just explained the things politely to the cops and none of this would have been in the news.

I mean, anyone think a black cop would have asked for ID, too?

    There may be.

But the problem is when the cliche things get thrown out there like it is commonplace among police, when it is not. Also you assuming you know what a police officer thinks and then react to what you assume about them is part of your own personal problems with the police. That and whatever it is you are doing wrong.

    Cliches mentioned:

    1. "Ego"
    2. "Quota"

Any cop who doesn't give out a warning either has a big ego or has a quota to meet, according to some who fail to want to take personal responsibility for their actions.
"I condemn the ideology of White Supremacy and Nazism. They are thugs, criminals, and repugnant, and are against what I believe to be "The American Way" "
Thus my obligatory condemnation of White supremacy will now be in every post, lest I be accused of supporting it because I didn't mention it specifically every time I post.

Well, yes. All black men arrested are victims of white oppression, especially black men found to be potentially committing a violent felony and refusing to identify themselves to the po-leece.

    Didn't you know that?

I'm not assuming anything. As I said, I was speaking of hypothetical situations. Obviously not all cops are this way.

I also didn't say that about cops who don't give out warnings. I don't expect them to. I've been incredibly grateful when I've gotten warnings from cops.

    I don't even think that's the issue.

    People lose keys. Fine.

Every high-school educated white person who's had to break into his own home is aware of what it might look like, and if a cop shows up to ask questions, they cooperate because they know they haven't actually broken any laws and because they're good citizens and they know the cop is just doing his job....exactly as they want their police to do them.

Obviously this pompous prick didn't feel that he needed to actuall prove he lived in the house he just broke into, because after all, he's a famous pompous prick and the stupid cop racist cop should have known that this house belonged to the stupid pompous racist prick lived there without having to ask.

It's all the cops fault for being too racist to pay attention to all the famous pompous black racist pricks in the city.

    hmmmm.....

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Of courrrse. The commandant of the New York State Troopers said so. He said that his officers don't have quotas, but naturally their performance is graded in some measure on how effective they are in patrolling the state's highways.

Pay more attention. I've been personally harassed by a cop who was driving 15 mph under the speed limit...which means he was going a feisty 20 mph, and then trying to race me as I passed him. Naturally, I didn't know the dumb**** was a cop until he pulled up next to me...illegally occupying the right shoulder, and waving his badge at me and yelling "what do you think about this, punk?"

I've a friend who's wife was threated by a cop who didn't like the fact that her daughter beat the pants off his daughter in a soccer practice.

So, yeah, abuse of power is routine among cops.

Cops are often thugs with badges.

But in this incident? The damn stupid pre-eminent black scholar that no one's ever heard of should have shut up and produced the damn ID the very first time he was asked and nothing would have happened to him.

Well, if your sole job is to patrol the highways and enforce traffic laws, then you are going to be expected to perform, to earn your pay.

But when a 'quota' is brought up, it always has a negative connotation that goes along with it, as if the person being cited (given a ticket, however you want to call it), is only being cited because of a quota, and not because they violated some form of state traffic law.

Its a method for those who are incapable of taking personal responsibility for their actions to attempt to justify what is going on in their own mind.

That sounds like a rare jack ass. There are jack asses in every profession, policing is no exception.

Except that when one examines the quota system it is a legitimate concern. There shouldn't be a quota system. I fail to see how the quota system falls in line with the idea of "protecting" and "serving".

    Now your just sounding stupid.

    Now you are stupid.
I find it amusing that when people bring up stories of specific cops abusing their authority that you automatically side with the cop and insult the person telling the story. Why is it really so hard for you to believe that a cop did this?
