Exclusive: Conservative group offers support for $2M

The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a check for $2 million to $3 million in return for the group’s support in a bitter legislative dispute, then the group’s chairman flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay.

For the $2 million plus, ACU offered a range of services that included: “Producing op-eds and articles written by ACU’s Chairman David Keene and/or other members of the ACU’s board of directors. (Note that Mr. Keene writes a weekly column that appears in The Hill.)”

The conservative group’s remarkable demand — black-and-white proof of the longtime Washington practice known as “pay for play” — was contained in a private letter to FedEx , which was provided to POLITICO.

The letter exposes the practice by some political interest groups of taking stands not for reasons of pure principle, as their members and supporters might assume, but also in part because a sponsor is paying big money.

In the three-page letter asking for money on June 30, the conservative group backed FedEx. After FedEx says it rejected the offer, Keene signed onto a two-page July 15 letter backing UPS. Keene did not return a message left on his cell phone.

Maury Lane, FedEx’s director of corporate communications, said: “Clearly, the ACU shopped their beliefs and UPS bought.”

Times are tough all around, apparently, so just smear those who don't buy your product?

More "righteousness" and "moral fortitude" from the conservatives.

    SOP - standard operating procedure.
If you analyse it, I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. -Ronald Reagan

Fed Ex is currently operating under different labor laws then their biggest competitor UPS and both do exactly the same work.

The Teamsters & UPS are right here.

The ACU isn't a labor union. It's a lobbyist orginization.

Fed Ex is running their trucks under the 'private contractor' scam. There's a new sheriff at the Labor dept., and Fed Ex failed to pony up the proper 'donations' in the last election cycle, apparently. The Teamsters are also mostly Republican supporters, so it was easy to peddle the spam and propaganda campaign services to them.

I couldn't agree more. It should be made illegal.

Yea, you know those Republican Teamsters:

The Teamsters Union is one of the largest labor unions in the world, as well as the 11th largest campaign contributor in the United States. While they supported Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush for President in the 1980s, they have begun leaning largely toward the Democrats in recent years; they have donated 92% of their $24,418,589 in contributions since 1990 to the Democratic Party. Though the union opposed former Pres. George W. Bush's agenda to open US highways to Mexican truckers, it did previously support Bush's platform for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. [145] On July 23, 2008, however, Hoffa announced the union's withdrawal from the coalition favoring drilling there. Speaking before environmentalists and union leaders assembled to discuss good jobs and clean air, Hoffa said, "We are not going to drill our way out of the energy problems we are facing -- not here and not in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge."[146]

The Teamsters Union endorsed Barack Obama for the 2008 Democratic Nomination on Feb. 20, 2008.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
