Man Shot Dead After Hitting Officer With Car and Brandishing Weapon, Capitol Police Say - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com
WASHINGTON — A man has been shot and killed by officers in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol after brandishing a weapon during a police chase, Capitol police said.
U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said around 5:15 p.m., police attempted to stop a white Mercedes Benz near Union Station. The car then fled and hit a police officer before driving the wrong way on Louisiana Avenue down Capitol Hill.
That officer was one of two injured in the incident.
An eyewitness, 58-year-old Dale Lanigan of Toledo, said a high-speed chase then ensued between police and the car before a crash on the Senate side of the U.S. Capitol.
Schneider said the driver produced a weapon once his car came to rest and after failing to respond to commands, officers shot him.
'The suspect is dead and we have retreived a weapon," she said.
Capitol police were working with the Metropolitan Police Department to investigate the incident, Schneider said.
