Pair jailed for web race crimes

While I don't agree with the jailing of these individuals, I don't pretend to believe that the UK's (or any other European country's) interests in this matter are the same as ours.

As for hate crime legislation, while I will admit that having unique penalties for violent crime seems a little redundant, I do believe special consideration should be given to some non-violent crimes. Vandalism being in my mind right now. I do believe there is a difference between spray-painting graffiti on a railway car and painting swastikas on gravestones in a Jewish graveyard. I do believe they are inherently different crimes.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that the penalties for vandalism need to be considerably harsher in all cases. I think Singapore had the right idea.

Wow...so they basically made being an asshole illegal in Britain. I really don't understand that country, they really have no respect for the rights of the individual, such as freedom of speech and press. Wow.

It's Liberalism run-amuck.

It is funny how the right condemns Iran and Ahmadinejad for holocaust denial and Anti-Zionism, yet think it is fine that this guy is trying to incite violence against Jewish people.

No one is condemning Ahmadinejad for Holocaust denial and Anti-Zionism. We're--at least I am--condemning him for being an anti-American asshole. He could admit that the Holocaust happened and he would still be an asshole.

Sheppard actually published private information of anti-racist politicians on his website. Why would he do this? To give potential crazies and hate mongers the ability to attack those who disagreed with their warped world view. I hope he has black cell mates.

Was this private information confidential, or was it a matter of public record?

Good enough. But these guys were doing far more than simply expressing their opinions. They actually gave addresses and phone numbers of anyone they hated, which constitutes harassment, if not endangerment by these crazy assholes.

Private from what I have read around the web. It was all intentioned for intimidation.

Addresses and tellephone numbers aren't confidential information, exactly.

Sheppard was one of the founders of Redwatch, a far-right site that publishes photographs, names, addresses and telephone numbers of anti-racist campaigners from across the political spectrum. In 2005, Sheppard's house was raided by police after the personal details of prominent anti-racist activists were listed on Redwatch's website, notably Billy Bragg and left wing comedian Mark Thomas.[1]

This is an exerpt, an when I cross referenced the names on Sheppard's lists, they were private numbers and addresses. I suppose it works like in the U.S., where you can have your number unlisted. Regardless, his intent was clear, to incite harassment and violence against the opposition.

I don't think that sorta thing is illegal in the States. Telephone numbers and addresses aren't secrued confidential information. If that was so, there wouldn't so many telemarketers.

ACORN published the home addresses of AIG execs who recieved bonus money a few months ago. None of them went to jail. I know Liberals live by a double standard, but I've never heard anyone mention that what ACORN did was illegal. Perhaps someone could shed some more light on the issue?

I thought at one point that jailing people for racism was acceptable. But when you sit back and think about it, it is unacceptable, but we also do have the right to say it nonetheless. I think being imprisoned for insulting a religion or a race is just as unacceptable as committing it in the first place. The UK isnt radicalizing and turning into a dictatorship; oh no, the total opposite is happening. The UK is politically "correctisizing" to the POINT where we have been blinded from our own freedom of speech, and then before we know it the only thing that will define democracy in our economy is our capitalist market.

It's to bad that the rest of the Muslim World doesn't take your view, till the Muslim World gets over the little fact about folks will take pop shots and make political cartoons of Mohamad and their si nothing wrong with that, they can't live by a double stander.

Well, aesthetically, I am a fan of graffiti artists. But I understand the limitations of universal tolerance...it's not for everyone. I had to go and look up what you mean by Singapore's right idea and I could never support caning as a rational response to criminal acts of vandalism.

I dont have a great understanding of the muslim world, i tend to keep my political views focused on Europe where i am from, and North America because the two are interwined at the best of times. But i was really dissapointed when the pro Islamic AKP party condemned Rasmussen and almost vetoed his arse (thanks to Obama soothing concerns, it never happened), and the secularist republican party sat back and said nothing, as with the rest of the country.

Nonetheless, its all good and well when muslim nations in the east make propaganda against the christians.

"Two men have been jailed after becoming the first in the UK to be convicted of inciting racial hatred online.

Simon Sheppard, 51, of Selby in North Yorkshire, received four years and 10 months, and Stephen Whittle, 42, of Preston, two years and four months.

The men printed leaflets and controlled websites featuring racist material."

seems abit extreme to me 4 years must be more too this than whats written here.

Good god.
I told everyone we'd be a police state before long and look where we are now.
Should we expect better from New Labour? Hell no.
They cannot wait to get rid of every civil liberty we have.

Okay people start scanning what you write online in case the old bill comes knocking

What does Muslims and Prophet Mohammed have to do with UK jailing someone for hate speech online?

Hmmm typical of you Laila did you even read the post that Kaya put up and why I made the post I did if not then go back and read it first before making anymore comments.

And for you question think about this why is only the Muslim World that gets their pantie's into a knott when someone makes an off-color remark about their so-called Prophet but it is alright for them to attack other religions both on the Internet and in Speach.

But do you hear any of these people being arrested and thrown into Jail in the UK but of course not the Muslim League would be in an uproar.

You Americans saying "God bless the USA" don't understand, the UK is a test market for new oppressive technologies and ideas. You're absolutely wrong if you think the USA isn't going to follow the UK's direction.

As long as politically correct politicians are calling the shot, we'll go in that direction. However, this is America and we're not going to put up with that crap for very long.

This is the land of the it's a right to burn the national colors in the name of personal expression. As long as that's leagal, it should be leagal to be a racist.

I'm just sick of Americans complaining and saying to themselves "don't worry Sarah Palin's on the case" when really it's just false hope. Someday the same abuses of the UK government will come to America and it will be too late.

I doubt it will ever be too late.

Of course, that opinion means it is more likely that it will be too late one day....
