Nineteen murderers and twelve rapists are among almost a thousand criminals who are missing and being sought by police after they broke the terms of their release from jail.

Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, told MPs that senior police officers had ordered forces throughout England and Wales to take “priority action” to find, arrest and return to jail offenders convicted of sexual or violent offences.

Mr Straw said that the Association of Chief Police Officers had also asked forces to review and renew their efforts to arrest the other offenders on the list.

Overall, 954 offenders released from prisons before March this year had not been found and returned to jail by the end of last month, the Ministry of Justice disclosed today.

How hard can it be to keep people behind bars? :doh

yeah, let's release a thousand criminals and expect them to keep their word. What could go wrong?

What do we expect from Labour

They think prison is not meant to be punishment but rehabilitation. Mistake number one.

Never trust a criminal.

I live in a prison town. Population ~20k, and 4 prisons. The siren indicating an escaped prisoner(they are euphemistically called "walkoffs") goes off almost daily. I am about 5 miles outside town and I can hear that damn thing here...

I don't live anywhere near a prison and i would be scared if i did, especially with our police being the ones who are supposed to keep them in o_O

Did someone say Thatcher?

Since 2003 most criminals — apart from those serving life or indeterminate sentences for public protection — serving 12 months or more are released automatically at the half point of their sentences. They are on licence, meaning that they must comply with pre-arranged conditions in order to stay out of prison while finishing the rest of their sentence. Every murderer is released from jail on life licence and the probation service must know where they live.
I think that's your problem right there ... wow ...

Four words:

Large Caliber Hand Guns...

Yeah, sounds horrible doesn't it.
Prisons are full so they are releasing more criminals rather than building more prisons.

Sarah Palin just became available....

Lol

To be fair to Thatcher. She was highly intelligent.

Besides Palin wouldn't be able to withstand PMQ, she doesn't have the ... skill that is needed

Seperation of powers. Never going to happen.

You "believe" that, huh? Have any actual evidence?

PMQ is where the PM goes before parliament and answers whatever questions parliament chooses to ask -- that is, the PM is directly accountable for his actions to parliament.

Seperation of powers. Never happen here.
