MI6 chief blows his cover on facebook

Personal details about the life of the next head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, have been removed from social networking site Facebook amid security concerns.

The Mail on Sunday said his wife had put details about their children and the location of their flat on the site.

The details were removed after the paper contacted the Foreign Office.

The Mail on Sunday said information published on Facebook included the couple's friendships with senior diplomats and actors, including Moir Leslie from BBC Radio 4's The Archers.

Lady Sawers revealed the location of the London flat used by the couple and the whereabouts of their three grown-up children and of Sir John's parents, the paper said.

She had not imposed privacy protection on her account, allowing any of Facebook's 200 million users in the open-access "London" network to see the entries, it added.

I heard about this today in the morning, it was completely the fault of his wife.
She published those details on her face book page.
It angers me that this stupid wife of his might be the reason why he wouldn't get the job.
 
Well, one can only hope he doesn't take the job now. And that his wife has learned a valuable lesson in being involved, even peripherally, in Intelligence.

Sounds to me like his wife is the one who is not security conscious, not him.

Perhaps he should have been aware of the situation, but it doesn’t appear to be a major breach of security.

Edit: Other than the obvious possiblity for his family to be used against him.

His cover was never blown since his identity was never a secret. Was parts of his personal life exposed, sure but /shrug. The most damaging was his address in London, not a national secret by any means, but nor was it a well known thing. Much to do about nothing tbh.
