NKorea threatens US; world anticipates missile

NKorea threatens US; world anticipates missile - Yahoo! News

SEOUL, South Korea North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.

Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.

The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.

The new U.N. Security Council resolution requires member states to seek permission to inspect suspicious cargo. North Korea has said it would consider interception a declaration of war and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to provoke another Korean War.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

IS N. Korea simply sabre rattling, or with the ailing health of Kim Jong Il, the real deal threat?

What do you think of Obama's reaction thus far, and what do you think needs to be the response from the US.

I think, just Like Obama on Iran, On Georgia, he will be too little too late, and if, God forbid IF, N. Korea is not simply sabre ratting, Obama wont go from "concerned" to "appalled" fast enough to save American lives, whether these are the lives of Hawaiians, or the troops in S. korea.

This has nothing to do with "partisanism" this is a real and genuine concern for me. The pieces are in place for a disaster, and my opinion that Obama is hesitant to take a stand on international affairs, in this case, may end up getting Americans killed.

A little bit of both, not quite either.

North Korea's missile test went some 2,000 miles before crashing in the Pacific. North Korea has no strategic bomber force. North Korea has no power projection capability at all.

What North Korea does have are nuclear weapons. How many is somewhat problematic, but the number is small.

There are only two probable targets for North Korean nuclear weapons: South Korea and Japan.

North Korea threatening the US with destruction is absurd. It is the emptiest of threats, and, on its face is nothing more than pathetic saber-rattling. On its face it's not even good saber rattling.

However, North Korea's rhetoric does carry a very real danger that it could talk itself into attacking either Japan or (more likely, in my estimation) South Korea. The danger of militant rhetoric is that eventually one comes to the juncture of having to carry out the threat, or be exposed and humiliated as a paper tiger. This danger is even greater in North Korea because there is very little indication that Kim Jong Il gets that.

Kim Jong-il and this regime has been allowed to act irradicallyfor much to long. It is time that we drop a nuke on them so they can see what they are playing with.

True on the ability to hit us conventionally.

What about a warhead on a boat? What about attacking the s. penninsula where 30k Americans are stationed. This is what worries me.

Me as well. We have 28,000 in South Korea alone. If the DPRK becomes too unstable, then the U.S. is going to need to seriously consider pre-emptive air strikes on the nation.

When I was over there we were briefed, with everything we have there it would take them 43 minutes to push us all into the sea.

My main fear is that the administration is not taking these threats seriously, but more like saber rattling in order to gain more aid in return for calming down. I think that to do so would be unwise. As Jong-il ages, he is becoming more insane and less predictable.

His history is to not take a stand until much later, Iran, Georgia, come to mind. I think thinking his stance with N. Korea will be any different is opptumistic to say the least.

Wait what? You mean how Russia attacked Georgia during the Bush Presidency?

In any case, I don't know why so many people live their lives in fear all of the time. "I'm afraid of Obama." "I'm afraid of terrorists." "I'm afraid of Muslim extremists." Most of the people worrying about it live in America. Nothing's going to happen here. And if something does, why wouldn't Obama go to war with North Korea? I don't exactly see him stopping the war in Afghanistan.

Some would say that we would be better prepared to fight a war with North Korea if we didn't go into Iraq for no reason. Others say today that we are better prepared to fight a war with North Korea because 1) Nobody likes them and 2) We actually have allies who are willing to fight with us now.

I was in Korea, at Camp Grieves. I remember being told that the stand alone camps were speedbumps, so the main body would have time to retreat.

Afghanistan and Iraq have created far more battle hardened combat troops than North Korea has, giving us a distinct advantage.
