South Carolina Governor Admits to Extramarital Affair (title updated)

Re: SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife

I agree. We can only hope that those who wish to see our President and his policies fail give him that same courtesy.

Indeed. I severely hope people take it into consideration as well when comparing apples to the wonderous fruit oranges.

Which fruit are you?

Well to suggest as some of your links and others have that its wrong for him to "use state funds to see his girlfriend" when he was there on state business or research and seeing his girlfriend was just a side bonus is dishonest.

But it is wrong for him to use state funds to see his girlfriend if that was his sole purpose. Hey, I'll set up a "state" issue and have it in Argentina so I can see my girlfriend. I have a problem with that. However, if he's going to Argentina for state business and he makes the time to see her, then that, on its face, is not unethical.

Caine, your obsession about this "state funds" issue is weird. You keep making it seem as though I said that he DEFINITELY and UNQUESTIONABLY took trips on state funds for the sole purpose of seeing his girlfriend. I haven't said that. I have pointed out that it has been suggested, and, if true, I think that's unethical. Clearly, in your eyes, people should discuss facts only after they do a thorough investigation of such facts.

You accused me of having to be right all the time. Please look in the mirror instead.

IF only we knew. But if that IF would come to pass then yes, I agree it is unethical.

Yes, I am a police officer after all.

Ahhh, I forget about your occupation. Actually, Caine, that helps me understand your position. :2wave:

*Decides not to put Caine on ignore ;)*

Re: SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife

I agree this does sound fishy. There is a chance that this is yet another Republican lack of morals scandle in the brewing.
If WJBC didnt have to resign, then this guy is safe.

I'm from and in South Carolina. On the whole SC-ians don't like this sort of thing at all. The consensus today was over half think he should resign, some thing he should be forced to. A lot of disgust in the air, also shame that this happened in our state with our governor. A resignation is entirely possible.

Is that just because he had an affair, or is it how the whole thing played out?

Both.

SC is the "buckle on the Bible Belt". Disapproval of extramarital affairs, especially in someone whose public image is that of a social conservative leader, is very strong here. For our own Governor, who has always had that image of family man, husband and father, and so on, to have done this is unacceptible to a substantial majority.

On top of that was the embarassingly idiotic way this played out, a sort of a "what was he thinking!" sort of disgust.

The only caveat some are bringing up is that Sanford's resignation would make Andre Bauer the Governor...and many of us think that would be somewhere between bad and disasterous.

Didn't Sanford as a U.S. House veteran once cite "moral legitimacy" as his warrant for pursuing the impeachment of Bill Clinton? Apparently Sanford must have decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

However, this is more than just another Ensign or Clinton-like affair, for the simple reason he breached his duty as governor by sneaking out of the country on the state's money for non-governmental purpose, leaving a void of executive power. That is incredibly unprofessional and irresponsible. He has to step down.

Thanks for your insight.

An actual quote from Mark Sanford regarding his state-paid holiday to Argentina: "This trip was handled very professionally by the [South Carolina] Department of Commerce, and I'm proud of their work there."

And I'm sure the tax-payers of South Carolina are equally proud.

And it wouldn't surprise me if Gov. Sanford had followed such praise with a speech about morality and how he still upholds the sanctitiy of marriage as it is defined in the Bible, as between one man and two women.

The governor is voted for governing. I can see no reason for his resignation. His own personal life is his business. As long as he governs well, then he's doing his job.

Where is your evidence that it was the state's money?

Wrong trip. That was a previous trip in which he was actually there on business.

This trip was not business, that quote is not a recent one.

He did however request that Argentina be added to the agenda of that trip. Whether that was to see this woman or not is unknown.

That was facetiously inflammatory, not to mention pointless speculation; the fact is he did no such thing. You are trolling conservatives and Christians with that paragraph, and nothing more.

When was this? I haven't read this one yet.

Been all over the news today. Does not necessarily mean anything, but I suspect that since it looks bad, that is why he is repaying for the trip.

Repaying for the trip? Again news to me.

You're consistent!

Embattled South Carolina Governor Sanford to repay trip expenses | U.S. | Reuters

Looking for an online link to confirm that he added Argentina to his trip itinerary. Wrestling on, so it's slow going.

Edited to add: not finding confirmation on the changed Itinerary, so consider that unconfirmed. I heard it repeatedly on TV news today(unemployment leaves me too much TV time), but find no source yet.

That trip he is repaying as pointed out in the link is the trip he took a year ago, while on official business with the U.S. Commerce Department. I think its very noble of him to offer to repay the Argentinian leg of the trip myself.

Your Link said:
"While the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with," Sanford said in a statement.
"That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such, I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip," he said.
