IF only we knew. But if that IF would come to pass then yes, I agree it is unethical.

Clearly, in your eyes, people should discuss facts only after they do a thorough investigation of such facts.
Yes, I am a police officer after all.

I'm from and in South Carolina. On the whole SC-ians don't like this sort of thing at all. The consensus today was over half think he should resign, some thing he should be forced to. A lot of disgust in the air, also shame that this happened in our state with our governor. A resignation is entirely possible.

Is that just because he had an affair, or is it how the whole thing played out?

    Both.

SC is the "buckle on the Bible Belt". Disapproval of extramarital affairs, especially in someone whose public image is that of a social conservative leader, is very strong here. For our own Governor, who has always had that image of family man, husband and father, and so on, to have done this is unacceptible to a substantial majority.

On top of that was the embarassingly idiotic way this played out, a sort of a "what was he thinking!" sort of disgust.

The only caveat some are bringing up is that Sanford's resignation would make Andre Bauer the Governor...and many of us think that would be somewhere between bad and disasterous.

Didn't Sanford as a U.S. House veteran once cite "moral legitimacy" as his warrant for pursuing the impeachment of Bill Clinton? Apparently Sanford must have decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

However, this is more than just another Ensign or Clinton-like affair, for the simple reason he breached his duty as governor by sneaking out of the country on the state's money for non-governmental purpose, leaving a void of executive power. That is incredibly unprofessional and irresponsible. He has to step down.

An actual quote from Mark Sanford regarding his state-paid holiday to Argentina: "This trip was handled very professionally by the [South Carolina] Department of Commerce, and I'm proud of their work there."

And I'm sure the tax-payers of South Carolina are equally proud.

And it wouldn't surprise me if Gov. Sanford had followed such praise with a speech about morality and how he still upholds the sanctitiy of marriage as it is defined in the Bible, as between one man and two women.

The governor is voted for governing. I can see no reason for his resignation. His own personal life is his business. As long as he governs well, then he's doing his job.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false, and does not swear deceitfully. Psalm 24
"True law is right reason in agreement with nature . . . Whoever is disobedient is fleeing from himself and denying his human nature [and] will suffer the worst penalties . . ." - Cicero
