South Carolina Governor Admits to Extramarital Affair (title updated)

Well, like I said I'd only ever seen Fox do it and it was just once (before this thread). It wouldn't surprise me in the least if news outlets all over were guilty of the same thing.

The other thing would be to find a source that whose whole intention is to trash foxnews and find something a little less biased and it may hold water.

Makes perfect sense.

Those diabolical geniuses.

I'm glad you agree 'cuz before that comment, I would have thought you were one of those Fox watchers.....phew.....

Typical Aps.

"Im right because I say I am, and if you disagree I'll put you on ignore"

That's what you concluded from my post. Okay. *shrugs shoulders*

I'm not saying I am right. I have indicated that there is evidence out there that he used state funds. I'm not saying he did, in fact, use state funds.

I am saying I think he should resign. This is my opinion. If you said, "I don't think he should resign," that is your opinion. Is my opinion the only right one? No.

I am completely perplexed by your response, Caine. It doesn't make sense based on the substance of my post. So be it.

Not sure if this has been mentioned at all, but I fiind it utterly disgusting that his personal correspondence to his mistress has been released to the public. We don't need to know about any of that personal stuff.

I mentioned it. I feel the same way. Jesus Christ, we don't need to humiliate the guy!

IMO - the fake comedy news is again the only outlet to perfectly sum up this story.

"He's just another politician with a conservative mind and a liberal penis."

Re: South Carolina Governor Admits to Extramarital Affair

Do you think that he just fell in love? :unsure13:

ETA: I mean maybe this isn't just about sex and lying... maybe it is about love.

No difference to me. You **** or get off the pot. You don't sneak around with a mistress when you are married. Period. The end.

If you do fall in love with another person, which seems unlikely without some degree of infidelity to begin with, you man up and tell the wife right away.

You go through the divorce process ASAP.

You don't fly off to a foreign country to be with the mistress.

The love angle doesn't get sympathy from me.

That's my view on marriage/commitment.

That being said, the fact that this particular guy had a mistress is none of my business. The fact that he ditched his kids on father's day is none of my business. The existence of these facts are of no bearing on his ability to carry out his job, which is none of my business since it ain't my state.

Since I do know about it, though, I will naturally have an opinion about the behavior, but that opinion was present BEFORE this incident, and really has nothing to do with him or his politics.

If he ran for president, let's say, his infidelity would not be a factor in my vote. His policies would be.

Well yeah he has used state funds, for state sanctioned purposes when traveling out of the country.

But of course, it easier to say he was using the funds explicitly to go see his "mistress" even though he traveled there 10 years ago before he knew her.

Seems to me that it should be easy enough to prove that the State funds were used for state purposes if they were. Difficult to prove if they were not. There should be an investigation by the state, or at least I would want one if it was my state.

That's possible, sure. If that's the case, then I don't see the use of state funds as being inappropriate.

I was merely pointing out that there had been a suggestion that he used state funds inappropriately. If you can post the statement I made where it shows that I said, "HE USED STATE FUNDS TO SEE HIS GIRLFRIEND WITH THERE BEING NO STATE REASON," post it, as I am 100% confident I would not have made such an allegation.

All of the above is admirable, yeah. And in a perfect world maybe it would play out like that. But who lives in a fantasy land? Love is almost always messy, at least true love is.

Sometimes you just absolutely cannot control your emotions...

I read that he was on McCain's list for a potential VP. And I really don't care about his personal life but I, as you, do care about his policies.

You can control your behaviors. Every time. What I am criticizing is the behavior, not the emotion.

The emotion is never an excuse for ****ty behavior. He engaged in ****ty behavior. Emotions are irrelevant in that.

Re: SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife

This year as in calender year of past 12 months?

What 3 republican ones?

Calendar year, Ensign, this guy, the Florida guy who was outed.

Re: SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife

So what?

....

Considering my point was that the reason why people are commenting on republicans and sex scandals was that they where current and frequent this year, it is important.

Going by Calendar year, yes. However, I think its rather pathetic of people to try and judge an entire party on their hypocracy based on a 6 month time period with 3 issues. If you look over the entire decade the sexual issues are pretty prevelant on both sides. However I reject that the past 6 months is the reason people are commenting like this Redress, for the most part, becuase many are the same that would comment this way prior to 2009 whenever this happened.

Many of these people, each and every time there's some kind of republican scandal, come out of the wood work saying the same thing. Its not happening just because its been republicans in the past 6 months.

Hmmm. It's hard to argue with that (damn it)

Sometimes your emotions literally do control your behavior--it's as if you cannot say no. It's all feelings and chemicals and rushes that culminate into love and good behavior takes such a back seat. Or it can.

I know people believe the emails to be an egregious invasion of privacy (I do too) but it showed a human side of him, a vulnerable side... I think he fell in love with this woman.

Oh and emotions are always relevant.

I was guessing I admit. I have made my opinion on all this clear, and it's pretty nonpartisan. I do think that part of the reaction is due to the frequency this year, and I think part is also that with the speed and fury of the attacks against "our side", some are looking for anything to strike back.

Slightly off topic, but this kind of thing happens on both sides, that is the attack dog political style. It makes it hard to have a real conversation, and I think this will remain so until we all start policing our own side, and pointing out when those on our side are being unreasonable.

Trust me, you're not one I'm talking about in this thread. You've been very even handed in this.

And yeah, if this was the first time I've seen many of the people in this thread blowing up about a republican scandal I'd possibly agree with you. But its not, its just not. They jump on it every chance they get and it always is attacking the entire party/ideology based on the actions of a few. Its no surprise that when someone tried to say that Edwards was the only schedule in recent YEARS by the democrats of note and I made a paragraph size list of others that there was no response to it.

And I do agree, its hard to have real conversations about this with both and agree its in part showing a good example by not just going after the other side but your own if they're being needlessly hyper partisan in this side. If there's one thing I'll give most of the republicans/conservatives on these boards its that the moment the facts come out showing the wrong doings of these people there is usually a near universal call of rejection by them. I very, very rarely see them trying to defend the person or refute it outside of times when those on the other side try to make it a greater issue as it is (sadly, they don't realize that that very thing is what happened on the flip side in the letterman case).

I have no problem saying what he did was wrong and saying if he was in my state I'd want him to resign and if he remains I hope republicans essentially shun him from politics. But if people are going to sit here in the thread going "HAHAHA Republicans are Hypocrites" while making gay joke after gay joke and proclaiming the party's "Dead" or other such idiocy then I end up looking like I'm defending him more than condemning because the over exaggeration and over the top nature of the other side requires a response.

The hypocrite thing though is something, MOST of the time to the extent that its taken, is a political ploy and little of anything else. It sadly doesn't shock me that no one wanted to address teh fact that as parents people tend to do the exact same thing that many liberals are crucifying this guy for (cause remember, many were saying they're not getting on him for cheating, but for being a hypocrite).

Unless he is on some soap box about the sancity of marriage and ll that BS I really don't think this is any of our business.

Control behavior? Perhaps. I don't let my emotions control me, but it may be true with others. I can only speak about my own emotions.

But even if the emotions do control the behaviors, it never excuses them.

I know people believe the emails to be an egregious invasion of privacy (I do too) but it showed a human side of him, a vulnerable side... I think he fell in love with this woman.

I think that the e-mails being released is absolutely positively an eggregious violation of his privacy. I flat-out refuse to read them or learn details about them for that reason.

Oh and emotions are always relevant.

I strongly disagree. They may always be present, but they are not always relevant.

An example: Any logical discussion. Emotions are totally irrelevant to logic. They are, if anything, an impediment to logic.

And in this case, his emotions are irrelevant to his commitments. He had a commitment to behave a certain way with regards to his marriage. The fact that he allowed his emotions to interfere with that commitment doesn't matter. He still violated the commitment. Had he allowed his commitment to dictate his behaviors, instead of his emotions, he would not be in the mess that he's in right now.

His commitment included removing himself from the commitment BEFORE acting on his emotions. Therefore, the existence of the emotions is irrelevant. Bringing them up could only serve as an attempt to excuse the behaviors. They are not excusable on this basis since his commitment required him to remove himself form the commitment before engaging in those behaviors.

I agree. We can only hope that those who wish to see our President and his policies fail give him that same courtesy.

Well to suggest as some of your links and others have that its wrong for him to "use state funds to see his girlfriend" when he was there on state business or research and seeing his girlfriend was just a side bonus is dishonest.
