Obama to Sign Anti-Smoking Bill

To be honest this is more of a step in the right direction compared to what we have been doing with tobacco products, in my opinion. This is far better than taxing the hell out of cigarettes, which to me means that the government cares more about making a buck than they do about getting people to quit smoking. Some of the poisons that they put in cigarettes are completely unnecessary and only serve to get people more addicted. It's nice to see that we are kind of following Canada's example.

All that's going to happen is that the government will make the tobacco people pay for their regulation and kind-hearted oversight, and the tobacco companies will pass that cost, plus 25% on to the saps that buy their products.

Probably. That's why it's only a step in the right direction. It's far better than just adding more taxes to cigarettes.

Expecting any intelligent discussion from you is just not going to happen, is it? *puts him on ignore and smiles knowing he's so upset about this legislation*

the irony.

You like being wrong all the time, don't you?

I provided an intelligent discussion of what the government really wants, and you pretend I'm upset about the legislation.

Guess what?

I don't smoke tobaccy, I don't chew the stuff, and I've no use for it whatsoever.

I enjoy that the government taxes the crap out of tobacco, because the people who voted for those busybody clods in the government raising the taxes are, in large part, smokers who wanted taxes raised on "the rich".

Nothing could be fairer than raising taxes on the poor who wanted something for nothing. I say double the tobacco tax and see what happens. The rate of smoking won't decrease by a factor of two, not even close.

Every single time I see how much cigarettes cost I am so thankful that I quit. There's no way I could afford to smoke at the rate that I was back then.

How much are they? I've never smoked a cigarette in my life.

We have to ask ourselves. "liberty or prohibition", with liberty comes responsibility. Who in this country does not know that smoking cigarettes will kill you?

Why is it, that a FEDERAL law is required to curb a legal product? Alchohol is far more deadly I believe, will flavored martinis ever be on the short list for this statist act?

My feeling are this "law" infringes on freedom just a bit more. It is a clear example of "incrementalism" and "statism" at work.

I could not agree more with your assessment. We know the risks now and it's about free will. We are moving toward what one of the heroes of WWII Sir Wenston Churchill called the "NANNY STATE" where everything is decided for you and your choices receive no consideration what ever.

Well, they used to be significantly cheaper in Montana, but now they are about the same here as they are elsewhere. Last I checked they were about $6/pack. When I smoked they were a little over $2 / pack

Wow. 2 packs a day would be $4,380 a year. Not good.

Hate to date myself but when I started they were $.25 a pack and there were vending machines everywhere and it was okay to smoke everywhere even in the grocery stores a whole carton was less than $3 in the 1960s, Bread $.15 loaf. Hamburgers were $.15 and gas was as low as 22.9 a gal. a new mutang was about $2000 and a Corvette was about $3500. And the "NANNY STATE" was way in the future.

If tobacco is so bad, why not just ban it outright?
Why suffer thru all this BS?

I agree but you have to remember that prohibition doesn't go over too well in America. The best way is to chip away at the substance and call it something else. Presumably with the word Family in it so that bovine America thinks its protection not prohibition.

After the law is signed, will Obama quit?
The AP radio news cast said -- seriously -- that the prsident has a "nicotine addiction." As though crude terms such as "he is a smoker," are not to be attached to holy figures.

I don't have any problems with anything in the law. Canada has pretty much been doing the same thing for years. It's really funny how it discourages smoking when you actually have to look at what's in a cigarette along with a picture of a blackened lung every time you go to pull one out.

I'm someone who believes that the mind has a profound effect on the body, and seeing those images which tell you that you WILL get cancer if you smoke them is not healthy for the mind. A lot of people have been smoking their whole lives with no problem.

If I were a smoker, at this point I would just consider growing tobacco illegally in my backyard. Even though it's still bad for you, it would have far less additives, and a few plants would supply a large yield. I'm more against bigger government than I am against tobacco smoking.

Its common. When I'm smoking, I'm a smoker. When I'm quitting, I'm addicted.

Absolutely. A lot of people also don't smoke and still get lung cancer or various other forms. A person very close to me got cancer on his vocal chords from singing too much...

As Bill Hicks once said: "Non-smokers die every day. Sorry."

It be my luck that I'd quit and on that day I'd get hit by a bus, just before I hit the ground because I fell off a building.

The government won't outright ban something that is making it money. They know people are genuine addicts to this drug and so by creating more barriers to accessing it, people will end up paying more to fulfill their addiction. It's sick, really... both because the government is hypocritically turning its back on the function of the DEA for money, and also because it is willfully engaging in the price gouging of addicts.

This is why I support decriminalization of drugs but not legalization. Once legalized, the government will engage in these kind of tactics in addition to the corporations.

Like I said, if I were a smoker, I would just ignore the government and grow my own supply securely. Tobacco seeds can be found online and the plants need little maintenance. If the government wants to play these kinds of games then I would just remove myself from the game altogether.

Smoking does NOT kill everyone that smokes.
-
I do not promote smoking.
With the exception of a cigar once in a while in my addiquitly faned addidition that I made for my smoking buddies I am a non smoker.
I used to think that any kind of tabaco would kill anyone but later in life I saw many that smoked live to there 80's amd 90's.
One example:
1- William Sousa had one of his lungs removed when he was 19 years old and never missed smoking 1 pack of butt's every day from when he was 18 till he died at the age of 87.
2- My grandfather smoked and walked at least 2 miles every day of his life till he died at the age of 92.
3- Louie smoked cigars till he died at the age of 89.
4- Bobby B. smoked 2 pack of butts till he died at the age of 97.
5- 18 of my buddies have been smoking since they were kids and they are in their 60's with no signs of trouble from smoking.
-
Ok I know that they only make up a few of the smokers but those facts stand.
-
Whats the first question a new primary Doctor of yours asks?
Are your parents still living? If so what medical problems do they have?
If they are deceased what problems did the have and what medical condition did they die from?
Thats what you will mostly die from.

I was in error. I just looked it up, and you can grow tobacco legally in the United States. So you have nothing to worry about.

Smokers can't escape the public smoking bans but if they want to bypass government bureaucracy, there is nothing stopping them from growing their own cleaner, cheaper supply within the confines of their property.

I just skimmed your post. The anecdotal =/= statistical evidence.

that said, I am all for people having the freedom to choose to smoke or not..

I enjoy a fine Puros pretty much daily. I know the risks and I accept it.

Three things that are as American as apple pie: Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Attempts have been made to ban them all, while at the same time to legalize that hippy **** skunk-weed.

So do you dislike weed only because it's associated with hippies. Have you ever done it?

No, I don't "do" it and have never "done" it. I have been around people who "do" it... and is smells like unadulterated sh_it. In addition...I don't have much use for people who break the law and then file their demands under it.

Then how do you know how horrible it is? Personally, I think it's a stupid law. People unfairly demonize it when it is really no worse than alcohol. I also think there's a world of difference between people who do it every now and then and people who do it almost religiously.
