SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea boasted that it has become a "proud nuclear power" and threatened Monday to harm the U.S. if attacked, as tensions mounted over a possible crackdown on exports of suspected missile parts from the North.

President Obama said the U.S. is ready to cope with "any contingencies" involving North Korea and vowed not to "reward belligerence and provocation."

South Korea's YTN news network reported that a U.S. Navy destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of carrying missiles and related parts toward Myanmar in what could be the first test of new U.N. sanctions against the North over its recent nuclear test.

The sanctions toughen an earlier arms embargo against North Korea and authorize ship searches in an attempt to thwart its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked since North Korea defiantly conducted its second nuclear explosion on May 25. It later declared it would expand its atomic bomb program and threatened war to protest the U.N. sanctions imposed in response to its nuclear test.

On Monday, the North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said it is "nonsense" to say the country threatens the U.S. and claimed it is Washington that threatens the North. The paper also warned that the country is prepared to strike back if attacked.

"As long as our country has become a proud nuclear power, the U.S. should take a correct look at whom it is dealing with," the paper said. "It would be a grave mistake for the U.S. to think it can remain unhurt if it ignites the fuse of war on the Korean peninsula."

So you all ready for a major powers scale war?
Negotiaitons are over..deals are over..stopping them getting the bomb is over..they have violated every UN sanction or whatnot against them.
They are technically at War with multiple nations states...and violating that cease fire as well.

A P.O.S NK rust bucket is sailing right in front of brand spanking new off the shelf UN sanctions with missiles supposedly on board.

So we going to fight or what?..Obama?
If we and our Allies intend to push this where it actually is..he and they better start mentally prepping the people for it.

League of Nations is the United Nations unless it stops constantly applying new sanctions on top of already failed endevours.
End points must be reached. No more Teacup diplomacy?

That's my biggest concern with North Korea. If anything did happen the first thing they would do is invade and/or destroy South Korea to gain control of the peninsula.

Whatever provokes North Korea and whatever retaliation we unfold there are potentially tens of millions of South Korean casualties.

I don't entirely agree with that. A rattle or two is required. We need to respond in a firm manner while trying not to provoke them. North Korea needs to know they do not intimidate us but while doing this making it aware that using South Korea as a hostage isn't a viable option for them either.

It's quite a delicate situation. Especially with Kim Jong-il looking like he wants to go out guns blazing before he fully hands things over to his son.

North Korea needs to understand that aggression will be met with aggression.

The United States does not want war. That does not mean the United States should hide from war. Sometimes, the war comes to you.

LOL ..sure we do. We always want war. That's why we invaded Iraq and Vietnam. We've got nothing better to do than to throw away American lives fighting wars that are none of our business.

That's why I've been pushing the Obama campaign promise to sit down and talk to Iran and even al Qaeda, and work it out nicely.

Why would the President of the United States site down and discuss political /military actions with non-governmental and non-nation groups?

The US has nothing to gain from meeting with groups that have no power other then that to kill.

North Korea has stated any attempt to interfere with that ship is an Act of War.

The UN has declared that ship must be stopped/seized/searched/etc if it is carrying weaponry. Ink is not even dry on the Resolution.

Its carrying "weapons"... assumed to be missiles... assumed to purchased by Myanmar.

IOW its time to put up or shut up.

The question comes down to how trustworthy is the lead? What are the repercussions if the UN seizes a North Korea ship that has no illegal material on board?

My guess is there is nothing on the ship an its just a ploy by NK. North Korea wants the UN to capture the ship based on a false lead so it can further establish it's agenda.

NK needs to be delt with. The time of the little dicatator needs to come to an end.

Jim Jong and his children need to be removed from power.
