Afghan firefight shows challenge for US troops

NOW ZAD, Afghanistan -- Missiles, machine guns and strafing runs from fighter jets destroyed much of a Taliban compound, but the insurgents had a final surprise for a pair of U.S. Marines who pushed into the smoldering building just before nightfall.

As the two men walked up an alley, the Taliban opened fire from less than 15 yards, sending bullets and tracer fire crackling inches past them. They fled under covering fire from their comrades, who hurled grenades at the enemy position before sprinting to their armored vehicles.

The assault capped a day of fighting Saturday in the poppy fields, orchards and walled compounds of southern Afghanistan between newly arrived U.S. Marines and well dug-in Taliban fighters. It was a foretaste of what will likely be a bloody summer as Washington tries to turn around a bogged-down, eight-year-old war with a surge of 21,000 troops.

Any war is a challenge. Afghanistan is a challenge in 2010 because it was not completed back in 2003 or 4 because G. Shrub I decided that we wanted to go off nation building in Iraq. G. Shrub I took the eye off the ball in Afghanistan because he was the puppet of the NEOCONS

The bad guys came back into a position of being a threat in Afghanistan and now our troops have win the war again in Afghanistan.

I guess Shrub and the NEOCONS supportthe troops so much that they aremaking our troops win the war twice.

Thank Shrub for that.
 
Define “Winning in Afghanistan”

What exactly does that entail?

First, eliminate people from using heroin. That’s no problem. Obama just needs to declare a world war on illegal drugs. Given how well that worked here it certainly will easily work everywhere else. That’ll solve the first problem.

Next we have to get all the different cultural, language and religious groups to really like each other. They have hated and been killing each other for about 3,000 years, but all that was before Obama. He just needs to give them a good talking to. People all over the world do accept that what our President says is best for them is best for them.

Next we just have to keep all the bordering tribes, clans and countries from not interfering in Afghanistan as they have been doing for thousands of years. So Obama needs to set everyone else in the region right too.

Finally, we just have to convince them to give up both their culture of fighting and give up their religions. Once again Obama can solve both. He can explain that their valuing their ancestry is wrong and convince them instead to be enlightened liberal atheists wearing T-shirts with peace signs.

He should be able to easily have all that done within 6 months.

I’ve only heard two plausible scenarios to end the war in Afghanistan. One person’s plan is “get the hell out of there.” The other person’s plan is “kill all of them, every person in Afghanistan.” Both those would work to end that war. Otherwise I don’t even know what “winning” would mean.

The Taliban and al-Qaeda is the enemy. It doesn't matter how much domestic violence remains in Afghanistan, we just need to eliminate those two groups and be done with it.

You have got it all wrong; our troops do not have difficulty fighting their opponents and winning, the difficulty is their efforts to NOT hurt civilians whom the terrorists deliberately use as human shields and hide among.

It is our decency that makes this fight tough, not our capabilities.

Isn't it too bad that so many others do not share our decency when it comes to these political issues?

Of course there are not facts to support such whiney anti-Bush tirades. But it will be amusing to see the Liberals make profuse excuses for their guy when the war continues to drag on due to our desire to minimize collateral damage and fight an enemy who has no compunction to use civilians as shields and cause collateral damage.

But I must say you and your fellow Liberals seldom disappoint; you will always find an uninformed idiotic way of connecting every possible failure to Bush and ignore the OBVIOUS failures of your own guys.

After all, Bush was even responsible for the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans by not taking "man-caused" global warming serious enough and not personally managing the evacuation of a Democrat controlled City.

It requires effort, the will, commitment and time.

Something Liberals seldom show any compunction for. With the level of attention span it takes to order fast food from a drive through, I expect we will see more demagoguery, divisive partisan rhetoric and Bush blaming before we finally give it all up and pull out and then sit safely back in the States and watch Afghanistan and Iraq descend once more in to civil strife and decline.

I mean, why should we care what happens there anyway? At least that is the attitude of Liberals. It's none of our business. What I do not understand is why Obama is continuing the BUSH policies against the wishes of those who put him in office.
