The pilot of a Continental flight Brussels-New York has died today during while he was piloting the plane, and the 2 copilots had to make an emergency landing before 12 o'clock at Newark Airport

7s7 Monde - Un pilote décède sur le vol Bruxelles-New York (896175)

wow looks like we've just avoided another airliner crash

Usually there is only one copilot in this plane, but this time they were 2. And copilots are trained to land as well as the pilots.

(and it's incredible how fast are the news...the plane has landed only a few minutes ago!)

I read this one was 61...maybe it's a bit old when you have the lives of 2 or 300 passengers in your hands.

I think the fighter pilots retire at 45 or 50 years old, maybe the airliners pilots should retire at 60?

2 months ago, a glider has crashed on a highway not far from where I live. They don't know the cause of the crash, but the pilot was 65, so it was probably a heart attack or something like that

Nearly every week I fly with my dad...I've read stories of passengers succeeding in landing a small plane when the pilot had died but wow...I can "pilot" it, but landing a plane is very difficult, it's like parking a car at 100mph

Here's a link in English

Jet Lands at Newark With Dead Pilot - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

Two first officers took control of the plane, a Boeing 777, after the captain, who was 61 years old, “died in flight, apparently of natural causes,” according to Julie King, a spokeswoman for Continental. The captain had 21 years of service with Continental and was based in Newark, she said, adding that his family had been notified.

The flight, Flight 61, took off at 9:54 a.m. in Brussels (3:54 a.m. Eastern time), according to Continental’s Web site. It touched down at 11:47 a.m., earlier than its scheduled noon landing, at Gate C123 at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Passengers said they were not told about the emergency and had no idea what happened until the plane landed.

About halfway through the flight, a call came over the announcement system asking if any doctors were on board, passengers said. Several passengers said they were, the passengers said.

A medical doctor on board the flight pronounced the pilot dead, according to Les Dorr Jr., an F.A.A. spokesman. The pilot was removed from the cockpit to the crew rest area, he said.

Bill had to retire at 60. Recently they raised the age to 65 though. My girlfriends mom still flys though she has been an flight attendent for 44 years now.

Ahhh, that explains why my car is so banged up. Thanx. LOL.

I just heard that the passengers didn't know anything was going on until they were greeted at the end of customs by a mob of reporters.

Age is really an irrelevant in this.

He was healthy enough and alert enough to remain a pilot.... he died from afaik a heartattack.

He could have been 25 and had the same thing occur.

Believe it or not, this man's fellow pilots are spitting on his grave in numerous postings. Why? Because when this pilot first got his job with Continental in 1983, he was hired during a strike as a replacement worker or, as union pilots call it, a scab. Using the phrase "once a scab always a scab", more than a few pilots are celebrating this pilot's death. It has resulted in accounts being banned at the airline pilots forum, threads being locked, and many members cancelling their membership. It really is sad that a man's career can be voided by a 27 year old union disagreement, and that professional pilots prove themselves to be as petty and vindictive as spoiled children.

That's the brainwashing of the unions. Union members are some of the most manipulated people you'll ever meet.

Can you imagine the passive hostility in any cockpit in which a crewmember is a "scab"? I had no idea pilots could be so petty.

They had like breaking news crap all about this.

It wasn't like the plane was in any danger.
