Depends, I guess. We don't operate in a vacuum. If you're saying it to make some crude comment about african heathens, then it's probably not kosher.

Maybe Joe Lieberman can be Matzah Ball Boy? Is Mitt Romney Funny Mormon Underwear Boy?

Do you see why those might be different than Igloo girl?

Hate messages delivered via threads, posts, signatures, or PM's are forbidden at Debate Politics. The Moderator Team defines a hate message as any willful wording intended to ridicule, debase, degrade, intimidate, or incite violence and/or prejudicial actions against a group of people based on their race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. Determined violations of this rule will be subject to incur an immediate revocation of membership.
    That's just a terrible analogy.

I could go on since the door seems to be open here as long as Igloo girl is OK with moderation.
I'm really having a hard time believing that you actually think "igloo girl" is a hate message and aren't simply angry because you don't like the way people are acting toward Palin generally.

The type of "hate message" that generally gets a Rule 18 violation is along the lines of:

    "filthy (ethnic group)"
"all (racial group) should be deported"
    "(religious group) are all terrorists"

"Igloo girl" doesn't quite reach the same level.

That is why I don't see it as hate speech. Just an alarming display of ignorance from someone supposedly debating intelligently.

Let's be honest is there any apology from Letterman that the right would accept? I'm guessing not.

If Palin was an Aleutian and someone said "I hate that dirty Aleutian, those people always steal woolen socks and molest our sled dogs," they'd get gigged.

Calling Palin "igloo girl" is like calling hillary "ice queen" or GWB "shrub" or Bill "bubba."

It's more indicative of a lack of creativity/rationality on the party of the person using the term than it is of any deep seated racial or ethnic hatred.

I have accepted it. I'm not really "the right" though so you may still have a point.

Because it's a attention-creating label to slap on her, because the OP is biased, because the OP wanted to appear biased, because the OP wanted to garner this exact response, ect, ect. Use of such labels in regards to anyone only belittles, detracts from, and diminishes the labeler.

I'm really having a hard time believing that you actually think "igloo girl" is a hate message and aren't simply angry because you don't like the way people are acting toward Palin generally.

The type of "hate message" that generally gets a Rule 18 violation is along the lines of:

    "(religious group) are all terrorists"

I didn't bold religion. I don't see how this is any different than referring to Obama as straw hut boy. Do you not see that? Why is it different to you?

Foremost, I'm put off by the sexist position of referring to a grown woman as a girl. Is that not "wording intended to ridicule, debase, degrade" based on gender? Is it REALLY not? What do you think the OP's intention was by calling the governor that?

Yeah, I have a soft spot for Sarah Palin because she gets treated so viciously, & it's too acceptable. Even here. I've taken similar stands for Hillary Clinton when I felt she was unfairly demeaned based upon her gender. And I do not like Clinton's politics. I have learned that bringing this issue up results in more ridicule, so I thought I try the angle of pouncing on the igloo thing. Is that or is that not some little swipe at the people of Alaska? Or do they all live in igloos, and I just never noticed?

This whole argument, RightInNYC, is not about Sarah Palin any more. It's long beyond that. It's the common and all too acceptable practive of demeaning women because they are women. Do the sons of politicians face late night jokes about their sexual matters? Do the sons of politicians suffer scorn because of their looks? Their partying?

    Amy Carter

    Chelsea Clinton

Jenna & Barbara Bush (the twins)

    Bristol Palin

    Willow Palin

Even Mary Cheney (albiet an adult) has gotten dragged into the fray based on her sexual orientation

Why do we allow this? Yes, I am on a soapbox, and you might snicker and call me a hysterical female. I've come to the conclusion that it will always be acceptable to belittle a woman based on her gender. And I'm taking a stand. It's not OK.

No. "ice queen" refers to her personality. "Shrub" is another word for a bush.

Calling anyone from Alaska Igloo Girl (I'm forgetting the word girl for a moment) is a slam on where she lives as though "all them people up theya" live in igloos. It's like saying all black people live in "the hood," Asians are "rice hut people" or anyone from Kentucky is "backwoods moonshine shack boy." It's prejudice, and if it's not OK for some peoples, it's shouldn't be OK with others.

And please don't tell me the OP didn't mean to demean her or the people of Alaska with colorful nickname.

    You're kidding, right?
I refer to Obama as "boy" all the time.
