18-year old charged in Florida cat mutilations

Saying that cat killers are inevitably going to become serial killers is delusional. Perhaps it's you that should be reading up.

Post #10 -- the thread flies right off the rails...

News Media does this-- disagreement is much more interesting than agreement.

We couldn't all just agree that this is a sick kid who needs help and move on. Someone had to come to the kid's defense. How dare we say that some serial killers start off on animals.

I'm afraid to turn the page to see there this is going...

Hunting shouldn't be for sport alone. All hunters should respect what they kill and have a reason for killing it. To just kill for killings sake alone is something I can't respect and wouldn't allow my son to do. If he kills a deer with a gun he is gonna damn well eat it. To just kill anything for fun and laughs is not healthy.

Amen, Tall. Best post of this thread.

...

True. It's funny how people twist up simple logic.

Nearly every serial killer starts off killing small animals.

Not every person who kills small animals becomes a serial killer.

You think he'll understand that or should we draw pictures, too?

When my dad taught me to hunt, he was very clear that I was to end the life of the animal as quickly as possible. He never stopped me from taking my BB gun/pellet gun out and hunting down small animals, even though I wasn't going to eat them, but I remember he always told me that if I injured it and caught it, I should kill it quickly.

The point I was referring to with aps, was that the method of delivering death doesn't make a huge difference to me so long as its quick. If you shoot a cat, or whack its head with a sledgehammer. Either way, its a quick death for the cat.

How many kids have killed other HUMANS by the time they are 18? I don't approve of torturing animals needlessly, but its a drop in the bucket compared to what humans will do to other humans.

The scary thing about this kid, it was all a secret little deal with him.

On the surface: "No, Mrs. Jones, I haven't seen fluffy." Behind the garage...well, it was a different story.

In that sort of practice, he was perfecting his ability to fool others about his true nature. Bundy. Part of the thrill was fooling people.

When I was a kid I would hunt with a BB gun for fun. Not for laughs though. I would pretend I was a hunter stalking real prey. One time I managed to kill a sparrow. In all reality it wasn't very hard to do and nothing like real hunting. But when you are trying to have fun and all by yourself you can imagine some grand things. You feel like you accomplished something. Then you grow up and think, "Well that was pretty stupid."

Now a days I would not step on a worm. I carefully look at the ground any time I go into the swamp around here and make sure not to hurt a slug. I hope if you catch your kid stepping on slugs you don't make them eat um.

I still like pouring salt on slugs. It's kinda cool and I don't think I will every outgrow it.

I may not want to know the answer, but what does pouring salt on a slug do?

This is why teaching your son to hunt is more involved than just teaching them to load a gun and pull a trigger. They need to be taught to respect their kill and they also need to be shamed if they take more than they need or can legitimately use.

My daughter won't eat fish. So she's not allowed to fish. For me it's incredibly important that they learn hunting and/or fishing serves a purpose and while it may be fun, fun is not the purpose. It's a respect thing.

It, ultimately, kills them. It dehydrates them really fast. It's really, really neat.

If I had a child (and I don't think I will in this world we live in) I think I rather have them chose to grow up and think shooting a bird is OK than to pay taxes to a system that ends up getting innocent people killed by its hand, on accident every day. I think the bird would be much less grotesque then giving up a 7% "kill um appeasement payment" every time my child would buy what they desired. How can one respect life so much for animals when one kills humans with money every single day?

I'll speak to the bird. I don't care if my son kills a bird; as long as he eats it. If he kills it just to kill it we're gonna have a discussion about that.

As to the rest it's wildly off topic so I won't go into it.

Well when it comes to respect one is far grosser than the other. (as to my off topic stuff)

Can and should a kid sport hunt? Hunting domestic animals is a kid's sport hunting if they grow up in a city.

Take the hunting out of the equation. It is the mutilation that is of concern

I did this often as a kid. Not because it was fun but because we had an issue that the slugs would eat all kinds of crap in our gardens so my mom would make me go put salt on one when it would show up on the side walk.

Apparently Beer is also a typical thing used for gardens. Slugs are attracted to the smell so if you put some in a bowl in a garden the slug will generally climb in and end up drowning. We had to do this the other night when one had spent the past week eating every single leaf off of all the flowers in my girlfriends flowerbed.

They would come out all over the porch after it rained and my mom couldn't stand them. So a little salt and a broom and the problem was solved.

This is certainly an unpleasant spectacle, but why is the reality that other animals continue to be brutally slaughtered on a daily basis for the purpose of human consumption ignored if this is criticized? Such animals often possess sensory capacities similar to those of a cat, and thus an equivalent or greater capacity to suffer from their own imprisonments and eventual deaths. Do cats deserve some greater consideration because of their domestication and emotional partiality towards them on the part of humans? It seems far more ethically sound to make such determinations on the basis of the ability to suffer.

Because they are pets.

I'd likely kill this kid if he did that to my pet(or at the very least kick the **** out of him to within an inch of his life-caught him in the act he'd be lucky to live)

I suspect they better move or he will either get the hell kicked out of him or he will be killed one day.

Kinda like those assholes who killed that former SEAL guys dog..they came within a heartbeats decision of all dying...and if they had IMO it would have been justified and deserved.

Yeah, that's what I just asked. Why does human emotional partiality make a difference when they have the same or a greater capacity to suffer?

True. And after that, I guess the only thing left for us to do would be solving the mystery of where such people as this guy could possibly develop violent inclinations.

They are much tastier than cats.

I would have no problems if this dude was killing cats for food though.

Uh...because these pets belonged to other people and deserved consideration based on their worth to those families. I dunno, maybe that's it.
